Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. My Name Is Eric
by

MY NAME IS ERIC is the funny and lighthearted tale of a young Pomeranian as he journeys through his early days on a farm in Australia to his last days in a posh apartment in Singapore. While there are moments of heartbreaking sadness, the novel is largely a fun and comedic romp. We watch Eric blunder his way through the typical life of a dog and, as he gains his life experience, we are given the opportunity to hear why dogs do the quirky things they do, right from the dog himself! Terribly spoiled, vain and smart as a whip, Ericis an interesting and original storyteller who shares with us his canine wisdom about the life of a dog—and life in general.! MY NAME IS ERIC will appeal to dog lovers and especially lovers of Pomeranians everywhere.

"Sound from a Star" is an original and absorbing story about a smart teenage boy, Devon, who receives a musical signal he believes is from space. In his effort to understand the signal, he records it and shares it with professionals, but the musical signal is duplicated and distributed which has consequences. An engaging journey of cosmic possibility, "Sound from a Star" is an enjoyable and interesting read for all ages.

When Friendship Hurts How to Deal with Friends Who Betray Abandon or Wound You
by

"When Friendship Hurts" is an informative and analytical self-help title written by an accomplished friendship researcher. This book, which is a follow-up to the author's previous popular book on the nature of friendship, Friendshifts, addresses such often ignored topics as ending harmful friendships, the nature of such particular relationships as those in the workplace or online, and harmful behavioral patterns in friendship. For me, the most appealing element of the book is its analysis of the underlying causes of malignant attachments to others. "When Friendship Hurts" is highly recommended to anyone who is in search of answers to questions about harmful and even those who are seeking to gain a better understanding of positive friendships.
