Hearts on a String

I liked this book a lot more than I originally thought I would. This is the story of 5 women who meet in an airport restroom and form a bond over the following 4 days. They didn't always get along and they didn't always like each other, but in the end, they formed a wonderful bond. This is a wonderful story of womanhood, strength, companionship, and adventure. It's not just a fluff-filled women knitting and drinking tea story. There is a surprisingly exciting adventure that I don't want to give away. Toward the end of the story I thought it was dragging on a bit and I was waiting for the last page. However, at the very end, everything came together very nicely and I was happy with the ending. One thing I did not like was the cover. I think the women riding down stair railings is very cheesy and has nothing to do with the story at all. If I had seen this book at the bookstore, I would not have even picked it up based on the cover and the title (I received it as a gift).

The Pillars of the Earth

Ken Follett

I "read" this book as an audio book, so my perception may be a bit different than others'. I loved this book! It took forever to listen to, but was well worth it. This 2007 audio-book read by John Lee was wonderful. He did an excellent job with the characters' voices and read at an easy to follow pace. Without going into to much detail, because there was plenty of that in the book, this was the story of a cathedral being built and all of the people and events that happened leading up to and throughout the building over about 50 years. Follett created beautiful characters that you felt connected to while reading. He wove together many different characters from different walks of life into one story. I liked learning bits and pieces about life in a monastery as well as the very poor people of the time, instead of the usual kings and queens that is written about a lot during this period. Follett wrote a wonderful story. I actually listened to the abridged version of World Without End (the sequel to Pillars) before listening to this. Now I think I'll have to get an unabridged version of World Without End to hear that in its entirety as well.

The Thirteenth Tale

Excellent book! It took me a while to get through this book as life got in the way of my reading :) However, this story was unique and beautiful. This is the story of a character's mysterious biography. There are two narrators; the biographer and the biographee :) The biographee is a writer herself and has never let anyone know the truth of her life's story. I'm sure others have already given a synopsis of the story, so I'll spare you the repetition. This is a story that keeps the reader guessing at what will happen next. Characters weave in and out of the story in such a way that you never know what is going to happen next. Setterfield has a beautiful way of writing that I can't quite describe what I loved about it. She gives details, but not so many that you get lost in the details and forget the story. The characters are wonderfully written and you can get lost in them and their stories. I was drawn to this book because of the cover art (I know, I know, but I am a lover of books and can't help myself), the idea of a mysterious biography, the promise of ghosts (which the story isn't nearly as *ghostly* as one would think from the back cover) and reviews by others. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good fictional story, especially historical fiction.

Caps for Sale A Tale of a Peddler Some Monkeys & Their Monkey Business

While this is an older book by today's standards, it is a classic. I am a speech-language pathologist and I love this book for the repetition it uses as well as the use of the /k/ sound. The colors of the pictures could use some updating/brightening, but the story does it's job. Even very young children enjoy the book because of the repetition and the story is easy to follow. Monkeys are an animal that a lot of children like, possibly due to the 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed stories. This story also has monkeys, but they do not talk, they simply say, "Tsk, tsk, tsk." :) Excellent quick 5 minute story.
