The Unwinding
by
George Packer

, March 12, 2014
TAKE NOTE --- I typed the following in my posted comment of November 27, 2013. For whatever reason(s), it apparently was not processed and/or recorded! My late father, while standing all-day 40-years on, vigorously and masterfully hand-winded copper coils as a machinist. Charley was the factory's last man to perform such a task manually when he retired in 1971. Rapid innovations in engineering technology; quality control benchmarks; transformation of corporate ownership-direction-product lines-fiscal accounting; factory renovations, retooling, re-locations, closings; both management and worker downsizing; benefits & pension restructuring;... altogether erupted throughout the State of Ohio and across the industrial Midwest, elsewhere during the '70s---inevitably leading an America (for which immigrant Charley worked tirelessly, lived honestly, and honored its social contract) into ongoing decades of seething, excruciating 'UNWINDING'. This is the theme of George Packer's eagle-eyed, sweeping 30+ years' state-of-the-Union narrative. THE UNWINDING: AN INNER HISTORY OF THE NEW AMERICA. *Winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Nonfiction* Hardcover - Published May 2013 Paperback - Available March 2014

Out of the Shadows: African American Baseball from the Cuban Giants to Jackie Robinson
by
Kirwin, William
AchillesX
, October 09, 2010
Author/Editor of "NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture" Bill Kirwin, presents readers a 12-essay eclectic anthology on the emergence of African Americans in baseball (circa 1880s), to formation of the Negro Leagues in the early 20th century, the tumultuous years throughout Jackie Robinson breaking Major League Baseball's color line, and aftermath. Powerful and effectual individuals such as Effa Manley, Sol White, Branch Rickey, "Cool Papa" Bell, Don Newcombe, Dick Allen, and Jackie Robinson receive prominent historical attention. This is one marvelous historical collected works that deserves reading.

Play Their Hearts Out A Coach His Star Recruit & the Youth Basketball Machine
by
George Dohrmann
AchillesX
, September 28, 2010
This is an investigative journalist's eyes-wide-opened expose on the fascinatingly ugly and shameful world of youth professional basketball exploitation at best, prostitution at worst. The author earned his bones, a well-deserved Pulitzer Prize, at age 27 as a Minneapolis sports reporter tenaciously chronicling one head coach's scheming, cheating ways while shattering, and crippling a University of Minnesota basketball program for years thereafter. PLAY THEIR HEARTS OUT is an exhaustively researched, comprehensive accomplishment with graceful and sophisticated writing. It is much more than the sports book of the season. It may well be one of the best of this decade.
