Could not put this book down. The narrator is creepy but also somehow loveable. His tactics in getting a girlfriend are cringeworthy. Just found out this is going to be a Lifetime movie and I cannot wait. Also looking into this author’s other books.

Darker Fifty Shades Darker as Told by Christian
by

If you are a fan of the Fifty Shades trilogy, this should be your next read. I wondered why I’d want to read what is essentially the same plot, characters, etc. as book #2 in the series, just told by Christian Grey; but I’m glad I did as it really sheds light on all the shadows from Fifty Shades Darker, all the untold version of events.

The Last Mrs. Parrish

I rarely give any book 5 out of 5 stars but this is one of the few that deserves it. In “The Last Mrs. Parrish,” character development is thorough and the plot is full of surprises, leaving you guessing until the very end. This book did not disappoint!

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo
by
Amy Schumer

Loved every minute of this book. Each chapter provides insight into Amy's life, shedding light on how she became the funny, relatable girl she is today. Don't expect laugh out loud jokes throughout this book, though; it's not meant to be a printed version of her comedy show.

Luckiest Girl Alive
by
Jessica Knoll

, June 04, 2016
I am disappointed in this book. There wasn't a secret or a twist in the story as the back cover implied. It is nothing like Gone Girl; I don't know why people are comparing the two. The only reason I'm giving this two stars instead of one is because it started off as a good read, the ending was just incredibly underwhelming.

Though it seemed slow at times, and jumped from one time period to the next too frequently, overall I found it to be a very interesting read and enjoyed the twist at the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a little mystery!

Drop Dead Healthy One Mans Humble Quest for the Perfect Body
by
A J Jacobs
melbutler02
, January 17, 2015
Drop Dead Healthy is another amusing book written by Esquire editor, A.J. Jacobs. A.J. sets out to become the healthiest man alive, taking on an often-humorous, two-year challenge for bodily perfection including "The Quest to Erase Blemishes" (sunscreen and Retin-A) and "The Quest for the Perfect Workout" (there isn't one). I actually really enjoyed the appendices at the end of the book with the breakdown of how I can make my own life healthier.

A beautifully written novel, "The Life Intended" leads you on Kate's journey following her husband's death twelve years earlier as she begins having vivid dreams of an alternate universe that seems too real to ignore. I could not put this book down and was pleased at the wonderfully unexpected ending.

Compendium of Curiousities Volume 1
by
Tim Holtz
melbutler02
, October 25, 2014
To most crafters, Tim Holtz is a household name. His first book, A Compendium of Curiosities, introduces you to the basics of creating mixed-media projects. His ideas include distressing photos, altering metal, inking and layering paper, along with a list of tools you'll need to create these projects. This book is great for anyone seeking an artistic adventure. In Tim's own words, "Get ready to embark on a journey filled with ideas and inspirations to spark your creative curiosities."

What a moving story; you can't help but smile while reading it. It gave just the right amount of WWII history to set the scene, but not too much, as it is a children's book. I plan to purchase a copy for all of my nieces and nephews for Christmas this year.

I liked the premise of this book but it was very difficult to get into, slow, and then difficult to finish. The ending left me a bit puzzled but perhaps that is just Brashares' style.

Spirit Catches You & You Fall Down A Hmong Child Her American Doctors & the Collision of Two Cultures
by
Anne Fadiman
melbutler02
, October 24, 2013
As a medical provider, I found Anne Fadiman's book extremely eye-opening and insightful. Part history of the Hmong culture (the ethnicity depicted in Clint Eastwood's 2008 film, Gran Torino) and part biography of an epileptic toddler and her family's struggles with the American healthcare system, Fadiman describes The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down "not as the book about the Hmong but as a book about communication and miscommunication across cultures." I originally picked up this book to learn more about epilepsy but found myself realizing and redefining my own intolerance to other cultures.

Before I Go to Sleep
by
S J Watson
melbutler02
, August 05, 2013
This is one mystery/thriller you won't be able to put down. Christine, a 47-year-old amnesiac, wakes up every morning with no memory of where she is, who she is nor how she came to be this way. The story delves into her relationship with her husband, her friendship with her therapist and her strong feelings that she has a son yet no proof that he ever existed. Like a dark version of "50 First Dates," Before I Go to Sleep left me guessing until the very end.

Hammered, Nailed and Screwed
by
Kathleen Hering

, July 14, 2013
A quick, cute "designer mystery" by an Oregonian author, I found "Hammered, Nailed and Screwed" hard to put down! At the end of every chapter, designer Laura Howard, the story's leading lady, gives simple, designer wisdom. My favorite? "It's a thin line between shabby & chic and shabby & shoddy. Sadly, the same goes for some men."

Gulp Adventures on the Alimentary Canal
by
Mary Roach
melbutler02
, June 10, 2013
Mary Roach has done it again. A humerous, sometimes disturbing, hard-to-put-down read, Gulp answers questions about the alimentary canal that you never knew you had. Why do terrorists conceal drugs but not bombs in their digestive tracts? Can one actually survive being swallowed alive? Answering these questions leaves the biggest question unanswered: is there anything Mary Roach won't do for the love of science?

I don't have kids of my own, but I love the idea of making your own baby food: you know exactly what your baby is getting. I purchased this book for my sister's baby shower and now that her baby is of age to partake in solid baby food, my sister can't put the book down! There are some standard recipes in this book along with unusual combinations that my nephew seems to love! I'll take his word on it.

I Brake for Yard Sales & Flea Markets Thrift Shops Auctions & the Occasional Dumpster
by
Lara Spencer, Kathy Griffin
melbutler02
, May 28, 2012
While I didn't get this book at a yard sale, flea market or thrift shop, it was still a fun find, good buy and a great read! Written by Good Morning America coanchor and former host of Antiques Roadshow, Lara Spencer teaches us what to bring ("Your Flea-Emergency Kit"), what to look for (an old storage trunk made into a small cocktail table that doubles as storage? Yes!), and how to refurbish and decorate with your new treasures. After reading this book, I feel a new sense of confidence going yard-saling or even purchasing used items online. This book was truly a hidden treasure I'm glad I picked up!

Shoo Jimmy Choo The Modern Girls Guide to Spending Less & Saving More
by
Catey Hill
melbutler02
, May 24, 2012
Reading about finance is typically the last thing I want to do. However, in "Shoo, Jimmy Choo!" author Catey Hill writes in a manner that is easy-to-follow and actually entertaining. Hill breaks down buying trends, retirement and taxes. The chapter on home buying has me considering leaving my renting rut and finding my first home! Written for "The Modern Girl," I still recommend this book for anyone of any age who has questions about finance but are too afraid to ask. I think this book would make a great gift for a grad, too.

Guinea Pig Diaries My Life as an Experiment
by
A J Jacobs

If you've never read a book by author A.J. Jacobs, let this be your first. His writing is not only insightful, but highly entertaining. Only A.J. would go to the Academy Awards disguised as a movie star, live as a beautiful woman for 50 days (it's not quite what you think), or practice Radical Honesty (this chapter is rightly titled, "I Think You're Fat"). Read this and you'll be hooked on his humorous writing. I cannot wait to read his next book!

Becoming Sister Wives The Story of an Unconventional Marriage
by
Kody Brown, Meri Brown, Janelle Brown
melbutler02
, May 22, 2012
This family's story really opened my eyes to the world of religious, legal polygamy. I was surprised at how "normal" this polygamous family really is. If we can accept others because of their race or sexual orientations, why can we not accept them for who they choose to marry? I consider myself to be a fairly conservative person, yet I do recommend this book to anyone who has uncertainty or curiosity surrounding polygamy, the religion behind it and just how they make it work. This was a great read.

Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me

I have read all of Chelsea Handler's books and this one is by far my favorite. Told by those closest to Chelsea, we delve into what makes Chelsea, well, Chelsea. She is a chronic prankster, yet in the end, she always stands by her friends and her friends stand by her. Whether you are a Chelsea Handler fan or not, this book is hilarious from beginning to end and is a must-read.
