Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Birthday Tracker & Journal
by
Jan Yager

The birthday tracker comes with collages and a review over the parts of a birthday throughout cultures. The birthday cake section sounds delicious! In addition to marking birthdays, you can also write notes for gift ideas and a checklist for thank you cards. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to give birthday surprises even if it's just a phone call.

The Pretty One

After reading the issues that plague Emily to the point of overeating, her determination to overcome them motivated me in my own quest for self-improvement. The amount of research and time Dr. Jan Yager put into this novel is appreciated the most when Emily finally reaches a state of harmony for both body and mind. I highly recommend The Pretty One to anyone who struggles with addictions or wishes to develop positive habits.

My Name Is Eric
by

My Name is Eric is about a Pomeranian dog who wishes that his human family could understand what he says. He would tell them the misconceptions about dogs and his struggle to control his instincts and attitude. Fortunately, the reader can understand Eric, and enough to to see his pleasure in causing mischief. This perspective along with the writing style and humor made me want to read the story at a slow pace to fully enjoy it. I would recommend My Name is Eric to my friends and mom and to those who liked Marley & Me.

Sound from a Star
by
Fred Yager

“Devon learned how to replace those empty feelings of abandonment and neglect with flights of imagination that took him into other worlds, and where possibilities remained endless.” This was my favorite line as soon as I read it. I knew then that the main character Devon embarked on a journey in search of truth and happiness. There was humor and suspense as he shared the discovery of a musical chord that can heal or destroy. The tune affected any listener somehow, even those who disbelieved 15-year-old Devon. He, on the other hand, was affected more by the extraordinary musician behind the chord. I would recommend Sound From a Star to listeners of music and anyone who would appreciate the various depicted musicians from different styles and time periods.
