Music Through The Dark A Tale Of Surviva

I interviewed Mr. Kravanh for a radio program and read his book in detail to write about him. It's an amazing and painful story, but shows how the good in humanity can continue when facing the worst acts that humans do to each other. A remarkable series of events that let Kravanh live when hundreds of thousands died around him. His music, which happened to be on the unlikely accordion, almost surreally helped him survive when so many did not. Similar to cases in other atrocious situations in prisons and POW and concentration camps where music helps people live, fragile humans cling to things like music that seem immaterial, but help us when we lack the other most basic means of living. Unexplainably moving, the scene where a child asks him to play after he's just learned what happened to his parents leaves one no alternative but to weep. I wrote about the book and posted my interview on AccordionUprising.org

From our journal of great children's books: "Girl glassblower shows kindness, pluck, and ability. Brilliant (in every sense) warm paintings." We give this book to friends and their kids. Exceedingly beautiful story about a strong girl character.

This was a pretty darn good book. I picked up the hardback because it has an accordion playin' girl on the cover, and I run a punk-rock accordion radio show. It doesn't have that much squeezebox in it, which is ok, and it's pretty brutal if young people aren't ready for violence with real consequences. But I really liked the characters, and the voice of the young girl was very believable, kind of southern, kinda Okey, totally consistant and not fake at all. That narrative voice was the best part, and is worth reading the book for. I'd love to hear more from her and I'll be checking out Ms. Vance's other books.
