Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Cove

Ron Rash has, once again, drawn me in to his world of vivid characters in a very vivid environment and, in this case, during a very interesting era of life in Western North Carolina. It was pure pleasure being transported to"The Cove" and to Mars Hill during WWII. The mystery is compelling, the characters develop beautifully and we are definitely sent back to an era in time, not so long ago, where fear and superstition are normal and acceptable. Read this book and go to The Cove. It is a beautiful and strange place.

Be ready for the expected and unexpected in Ron Rash's latest offering of short stories. He has a rare talent: blending the ways and the lifestyle of seemingly traditional, rural, appalachian characters, with very modern themes and subject matter. Each story is a gem and they draw the reader in with characters as rich and unpredictable as the appalachian mountain environment they live in. The journey is dark and scary and lush and beautiful at once. Ron Rash is one of our great southern writers and I highly recommend Burning Bright: Stories.
