Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. In the Time of the Butterflies

My bookclub assigned this. I made it through the first half with just a bit of eye-rolling and sighing. Now it's become unbearable. Ms Alvarez presents these women as easy archetypes: a cutesy, a natural mother, a co-dependent and a feminist. The real humans HAD to have been more interesting. The real story HAS to be more engaging. This is so formulaic I find it troubling. I will be reading a biography of the sisters rather than this.

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk A Modest Bestiary

This is an excellent book. I loved it and as I was reading it I was sure that some would not love it. Mr. Sedaris renders his modern day fables with great skill and with all the transgressive content of traditional stories everywhere. Grimm's fairy tales are pretty risque' in their original, many traditional Native American, indigenous African, and Asian tales are just as surprising in their violence, sexuality, and cruelty. These are wonderful and can be takan, like any fine fable, simply as wonderful stories or as something deeper.

Christmas Pearl
by

This book could have been titled "Mammy Poppins." I was frankly offended several times. There are times when women in verbally and emotionally abusive relationships are told that this is because they LET their husbands treat them this way. I was stunned. I'm not offended by John Waters' work because he intends to offend. This appeared to be a case of simple ignorance. There are various racist assumptions as well. While some may be a part of the culture of the deep South, I'm not sure that excuses anything. I found it to be a trite fest. However, if you like your Christmas stories with a side of sap, then you might enjoy it.
