Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Just started this a few days ago, and for a 165-ish page book I'm moving slowly, but only because I want to savor it, re-reading the short essays almost immediately on finishing. I didn't get the poetry gene, and I imagine this is as close as I will come to poetry without actually sticking my feet in the pool. It is delicious and lovely and personal and natural. Five golden shining stars.

Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher The Epic Life & Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis

I'm sadly deficient is Native American history, but that did not detract even an ounce from the wonderfulness of Egan's latest book. I could not put it down--I do not say that lightly. It's one of the best books I've read in the past 5 years.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did, in fact I didn't even really want to read it. What lovely, clear writing of a time I am only vaguely aware of with a childhood memory, and which I knew nothing about.

Big Burn Teddy Roosevelt & the Fire That Saved America
by

How can it be that I've not read Timothy Egan until now? The writing is smooth and silky, little snippets of humor where it fits like a glove, the history just delicious. Teddy Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot boxing in their undies? Love it. I'm headed straight to his other books after this one.

Zeitoun
by
Dave Eggers

I'd heard good things about Zeitoun from people I trust but had no idea of the spell it would weave while I read. A loving family in New Orleans, working their way up, struggling, raising children, working hard, paying bills--and then Katrina hits and suddenly the only thing that matters is that Abdulrahman Zeitoun was not born in the United States. I couldn't put it down but I wanted so badly for it to end--it had to end, it could not go on. How could this happen? Thought for sure it would win the National Book Award for Nonfiction and was shocked it didn't. This is the first book I've read by Eggers and I will absolutely read everything he's written.
