Janice P. Nimura: Stand in the Place Where They Were (0 comment)
I’ve always loved historic house museums, loved peering beyond the velvet rope into a Victorian bedroom or a colonial kitchen and imagining the ghosts that wore those dresses, or worked the handle of that butter churn, or laid the fire in that grate...

Quicksilver Baroque Cycle 01 by Neal Stephenson
    rosemariewatkins, January 01, 2013
I didn't read this book until this year, 2012. I'm sorry I waited so long. The beginnings of science and the personalities involved have always interested me, and Neal Stephensons's fictitious (but fact filled!) account is addictive reading.

Devil in the Grove Thurgood Marshall the Groveland Boys & the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King
    rosemariewatkins, August 06, 2012
This is nonfiction at its best. Gilbert King brings life a shameful episode in our nation's past that I was only vaguely aware of.

    Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey
    rosemariewatkins, August 05, 2012
An excellent YA book that will appeal to not-so-young adults as well. This coming of age story deserves its comparisons with To Kill a Mockingbird.

Shop Class as Soulcraft An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B Crawford
    rosemariewatkins, January 02, 2011
A different point of view regarding manual labor. Who is the real "Einstein," the bookworm or the grease monkey? Author Matthew B. Crawford has the creds in both areas and finds being a mechanic more intellectually challenging/sastisfying. Simply excellent.
