Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Christmas at The Mysterious Bookshop
by
Otto Penzler
Daniel Cook
, December 08, 2012
This anthology has become part of my Christmas traditions, re-reading these mysteries which all happened around The Mysterious Bookshop in New York City. Enjoying the different authors is a treat as the characters and styles change with each story, but all will entertain you. "I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus" and more, to get you in the Mysterious Christmas Spirit!

Stories of Ray Bradbury Everymans Library Classic
by
Ray Bradbury
Daniel Cook
, June 08, 2012
With Ray Bradbury's passing this past week, accept my invitation to reread your favorite story or novel as a toast to this man's talent. My personal favorites include The Martian Chronicles (which I've been reading and rereading for over 40 years) and this huge anthology of short stories. Good sailing and fair winds, Mr. Bradbury.

Street Player My Chicago Story
by
Danny Seraphine
Daniel Cook
, May 26, 2011
Danny Seraphine tells many great stories about Chicago, and the good days when the band was climbing to the top. He has a great memory and gift for adding details which keep your interest and keep the stories moving along. I rated this book a "4" instead of a "5" only because Danny tends to get too involved with his personal viewpoint, rather than trying to be more objective about what was happening with the rest of the members of the group. Any fan of Chicago, especially the early years, will enjoy this history of the band.

Hard Days Write The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song
by
Steve Turner
Daniel Cook
, January 24, 2011
Steve Turner tells the story behind each song the Beatles recorded. Who came up with the title for "A Hard Day's Night?" You'd be surprised; he tells many great stories with the history of the songs we all grew up with. (Answer: "A Hard Day's Night" was a Ringo-ism, he was prone to drop these phrases at unexpected times.)

Mothers Best Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again
by
Lisa Schroeder
Daniel Cook
, January 08, 2010
I love to read cook books, but I don't buy many. This one, written by a local lady, has the food I enjoy: comfort foods which use everyday ingredients. After reading through her recipes, I can't wait to visit the restaurant! (Mother's Bistro, downtown Portland.)

Reinventing Collapse The Soviet Example & American Prospects
by
Dmitry Orlov
Daniel Cook
, November 12, 2008
Fascinating read; Mr. Orloff speaks from experience and has a lot of eye-opening stories of how people coped during the Soviet's collapse. He also demonstrates quite convincingly that our American experience is heading down the same road. This is a fairly short book (I read it in one short night) with a good number of chuckles... the Russian people, of necessity, have a good sense of humor.

Joy Of Cooking 1975 edition
by
Irma Rombauer
Daniel Cook
, November 10, 2008
I have worn out several copies of Joy and given copies to my adult children. I have many cookbooks, but this is THE one for so many everyday recipes. When a new edition (with Ethan Becker) came out, I purchased it but was disappointed with those recipes. This edition circa 1970s has many great recipes for both everyday and holiday celebrations. They vary from simple basic recipes which any beginner could enjoy to more complicated and challenging recipes. Irma Rombauer and Marion Becker, the original authors, present cooking with clear explanations for the beginner. This is good food with an eye to nutrition, using everyday ingredients. This would be an ideal gift for newlyweds or anyone starting out on their single life.

New Annotated Dracula
by
Stoker, Bram
Daniel Cook
, October 12, 2008
I heard Mr. Klinger tonight on the Coast to Coast radio show and can't wait for his November appearance at the Beaverton Powell's. His knowledge of both Dracula and the Sherlock Holmes stories (see his other annotated Homes books) is amazing.

Square Foot Gardening
by
Mel Bartholomew
Daniel Cook
, February 25, 2007
Written for those of us who start out with much ambition for our new garden, then become overwhelmed with the daily work it requires. Mel has been a home gardener and presents his low-work method for a productive garden. Vegetable Gardening does not have to be a full-time job! I recommend this for all who love being with their plants but can't spare the time most gardens demand.

We bought this for my kids 20+ years ago, it's still a great story for kids at Christmas. Turn off the TV and read to the little ones!
