Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Not as good as I'd hoped (after all the Colbert hype), but quite readable.

I never thought I would love a book whose subject is the Periodic Table of the Elements. But this book is readable and funny and wise, and even a liberal-arts person like me can savor it. I learned quite a few things while having a wonderful time. Reading experiences don't get much better than that!

This is the best Bosch/Haller novel yet! Michael Connelly just keeps getting better, and The Reversal is an un-put-down-able read.

Stephen King, Scribner

I am nearly the same age as Stephen King, and what resonates with him resonates with me. The description of the late 1950s and early 1960s in this book rings true, and brings back many memories (not all of which are pleasant). The time-travel plot is well thought out, the romantic element is beautiful and heartbreaking. This is King's best book since "It" (whose readers will receive a special treat here, with the reprise of two beloved character). Even folks who normally don't read Stephen King because of the supernatural themes should give this one a try. There are no horrors here other than those arising from mankind's evil depths, and no monsters other than the human ones.

Help

Kathryn Stockett

This was the most enjoyable novel I've read in years. It made me laugh, made me cry, and made me think. I hope Kathryn Stockett writes a sequel, because I want to know what happens next! I feel as if I know these people, and their lives just can't stop when I close the covers of the book.
