Grandma, Tell Me Your Memories
by
Kathy Lashier
SQ
, October 03, 2011
Great little book. Lots and lots of questions that stir memories. My mother-in-law (almost 90) is bed-ridden and I used many of the questions to stimulate her thinking as well as record vignettes for her personal history. We didn't have a lot to talk about, were rehashing the same things, same worries and complaints, same stories, until I got the book. With the questions, she's been prompted to share many things that we never knew about her childhood. She's enjoyed the little walks down memory lane. The evening questions gave her something to look forward to and something positive to reflect on. We've laughed and shed tears over her wonderful memories--that she may not have ever thought to share had I not come across this book.

Complete Idiots Guide To Raising Chickens
by
Jerome D. Belanger
SQ

Good place to start reading about raising your own chickens at home. So much to know; the book covers a lot! Obviously there's a lot more reading that must be done in order to be successful at this endeavor.

Complete Idiots Guide To Knitting & Crocheting
by
Barbara Breiter
SQ
, September 29, 2011
Some interesting ideas of things to make, but for the real beginner...It just doesn't work (at least the knitting portion). I tried (and I'm not an idiot or uncoordinated) but trying to learn how to knit from just this book was a joke. Stuck the needles back in the ball of yarn and it is now a fireplace decoration!

Complete Idiots Guide to Understanding Mormonism
by
Drew Williams
SQ
, September 23, 2011
With 2 Mormons making a bid for the President of the United States...Mormonism needs to be better understood by voters. This book presents a basic look at the religion: its beliefs and its foundation. A fair approach to understanding the religion (instead of all the negativism and inaccuracies so many "anti-Mormon" reporters and books are publishing).

Net Force Hidden Agendas
by
Tom Clancy
SQ
, September 21, 2011
Evidently I ended up jumping into the middle of a series without realizing it. Discovered there are 3 books before and 6 books after Hidden Agendas. The books have a lot of characters and detail to follow, have to flip back and forth some. I passed the first few in the series to my husband and he really likes them, ended up getting all the rest. My son read them and enjoyed them too... Just not my cup of tea.

Teaching memoir writing, I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and approaches to writing. This book forms a nice collection of ideas but spreads its content over too large an area.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! for Annie McRae
by
Brad Wilcox
SQ

I took a writing class from this author and he is fun and creative. Annie McRae is a cute children's book that teaches the lesson of caring for yourself and others. Interesting illustrations (including a little game of finding horseshoes) and I love the turquoise cowboy boots Annie wears!

First Love & Forever A Novel
by
Anita Stansfield
SQ
, September 14, 2011
This book, together with the rest of this series, is easy reading yet examines some serious life problems (cancer, abuse, spirituality, family dynamics, depression, suicide, rape, poverty/wealth...). Don't be misled by the titles, Stansfield isn't writing just sweet little romance novels, though romance is involved. The books and characters tie together well as different stories are developed and social issues are discussed. The writing is uplifting, clean, and enjoyable to read.

Eye of the World Wheel of Time 01
by
Robert Jordan
SQ
, September 09, 2011
I have been buying books from the Wheel of Time series for my son for years...not until recently did I pick up one to read. Jordan is a great storyteller and builds interesting characters...All the unusual names and places take a concentrated effort to remember which distracts some from the pleasure of reading, but overall they are interesting.

Lincolns Daughter
by
Tony Wolk
SQ
, September 07, 2011
Tony Wolk was a writing and literature professor at PSU. This book and the 2 others in the same series were created during his tenure there. Tony has an interesting way of telling a story: a lot of feeling, a little sci-fi, researched background to support the story... It all works, and works well. These are fascinating books.
