Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Flight Behavior
by
Barbara Kingsolver

Definitely the best book I have read this year- I flew through it in only a couple days! As is typical of Kingsolver's other novels, the plot never soars with grippingly adventuresome action, but the vivid characters, real description, and heartbreaking issues kept me riveted. I felt engrossed, consumed, in the world she had created and couldn't believe I had to leave the characters within the pages. Bravo, Barbara Kingsolver! You really soared in this one :)

When Women Were Birds Fifty four Variations on Voice
by
Terry Tempest Williams
Katie Boehnlein
, August 11, 2012
I was lucky enough to see Terry Tempest Williams read excerpts from her new book, When Women Were Birds, at Powells in June. When I read the book myself, her voice resounded in my mind as I read each and every on of her words. The same voice that wrote Refuge, Terry always expertly makes powerful connections between the natural world and our own lives. Sometimes heartbreakingly personal in her writing, this book is no exception. Terry struggles with the concept of voice, especially the voice of her mother, which was silenced after her death. This tone of this book is definitely more painful than her other's, but no less genius. If you are a Terry Tempest Williams fan, or even just a fan of lyrical and beautiful writing, then this is a must-read!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I love Eggers' writing and respect his motivation towards philanthropy and this book is no exception. If you have ever wondered if there are injustices in our own country that were hidden behind closed doors, read this book. Unbelievable.

Haroun and the Sea of Stories
by
Rushdie, Salman

A beautifully, imaginative book filled with wonder, mystery, silliness, and a Seussical mystical quality as well! I loved the tone of the book, it reminded me of magical realism the likes of Marquez and Allende. Though this book has a child-like quality to it, it also includes profound commentary on storytelling, modernization, pollution, and family weaved in and dispersed throughout. I also loved Rushdie's descriptive writing, he took me on a carpet ride to another world.
