Everything Matters

A very strange, yet intriguing story that tells the life of a man born with the knowledge of the exact day & time that the world will be destroyed by a meteor 29 years after his birth. His entire life is plagued by the idea that no matter what he does, whether good or bad, life as we know it will still be wiped out in the near future. I kept trying to figure out what I would do in this situation. Could I still enjoy my life knowing that everything was for nothing? What would get me out of bed in the morning or inspire me if I knew nothing mattered? Or would it make me more appreciative of the little moments from day to day - seeing every minute as something precious to value? The main character in this story is flawed and completely human which I appreciated. It's so easy to understand him while at the same time I found myself frustrated by his lack of concern and his path through life. Overall, this is a great read that makes you think. I'll definitely pick up more books by Ron Currie.

Precious & Fragile Things

A powerful, haunting read. This is the story of a woman kidnapped and taken to a cabin in the woods where she's kept for three months by a man battling his own demons. The narrative immediately binds you to both the protagonist and her captor - who is, essentially, a good person cursed by fate and circumstances. As the months pass, their relationship develops and she comes to care for him in a removed, motherly way without loosing her perspective on the reality of their situation. The ending was powerful and as a result, I think this story will stay with me for a long time to come.

Hunger Games 01

I really loved this book. At first, I assumed it would be a dark, depressing, apocalyptic read due to the story's premise where young teenagers are forced by their government to participate in the "Hunger Games", a yearly reality TV drama where they can choose to either kill or be killed since only one will be left standing. I found, however, that the characters had so much charm and wit they really outshined the morbidity of the story. I'm not saying it's a happy-fluffy sort of read, but you are so invested in the book from page one that the characters fully come to life and shine above the death and corruption around them. This is an intense read and very powerful story of survival and human nature that will stick with you weeks after you've finished it.

The Red Tent

A really beautiful story full of rich details describing the way women in nomadic cultures once lived together and depended upon one another for childbirth, the raising of children and in caring for their tribes. Told from the perspective of a midwife, she recounts her stories of the red tent - a place women were exiled during the three days of the new moon in order for them to have their menstruation away from the men and the place in which women went to birth their children. The red tent was a place of bonding and communing with each other. It's a very beautiful concept when compared with the way we largely ignore our bodies cycles in today's society. I was fascinated by the simple fact that a woman's body was once aligned to the moon and to the women she surrounded herself with and I was a little saddened that we've grown so out of alignment with our natural connections to the earth.

I didn't expect this to be my kind of book. It appeared to be a typical, cheesy, historical romance but the book had been recommended to me by so many people I finally picked it up. After 900 pages, I was in deeply in love with this story and it's characters. I immediately flipped back to page one and started the whole experience over again. The relationship that develops between Claire and Jaime is wonderfully simple, filled with real moments of insecurity, honesty and passion. These are two characters that will stay with me forever. I was also very intriguing in the story's accounts of life in 18th Century Scotland. Every detail was well researched and smoothly incorporated into the character's daily lives, from medical techniques of the day to superstitious beliefs regarding strong minded women. This is a quick flowing, wonderful book full of tumultuous adventures and a truly great love story.

A great Urban Fantasy novel, the characters are strong, funny and likable, the story is just as dark and edgy as it is humorous or romantic, and the series just gets more addictive with each book. This is my favorite book of 2010 - the one I just can't stop rereading - and it gets my 2011 Puddly Award vote. I can't wait for the next book in the Kate Daniel's series to come out!!!
