Hammered the Iron Druid Chronicles 3

After reading HOUNDED and completely falling in love with this series, I read the synopses for the next two books, HEXED and HAMMERED. I thought HEXED sounded great. Who doesn’t want to see Atticus mix it up with some more witches and fight an honest-to-goodness fallen angel? I wasn’t disappointed, and Hearne exceeded my every expectation with the book - it was even better than HOUNDED with more action, a continued development of the world and the relationships among characters, and more Leif (the guy I want backing me up in a fight!). But the synopsis of HAMMERED left me a little cold [no pun intended ;-)]. I loved the Celtic mythology at the heart of the series so far, and I really liked the Southwest as a setting for urban fantasy. Heading to Asgard and focusing on the Norse gods…I was a little apprehensive. I was wrong. I can admit it. HAMMERED blew me away! It was the best of the series, hands down. The series has always been entertaining: lots of action, plenty of humor, and great characters. These are all present in HAMMERED, but this book offers more. It packs an emotional wallop, and poses some interesting questions. What is the price of revenge? How much are you willing to sacrifice, both for yourself and for your friends? How do the events in our lives shape who we are, what we become, and the choices we make? One thing I really liked about the book was the handful of chapters written from the POV of a different character. Each of these chapters has a very different feel, rhythm, language, etc. It really shows Hearne’s skill as a writer that he can make each narrator feel so unique and real. I’m not going to give a plot summary here, since the synopsis is given on the back of the book and in many other reviews. All I can say is that this is the most emotionally satisfying book of the series. If you liked the first two books, this one won’t disappoint.

Hexed The Iron Druid Chronicles 2

This second installment of the Iron Druid Chronicles features more of the butt-kicking druid Atticus O’Sullivan doing what he does best " facing down his enemies with equal parts might and wit. After defeating his nemesis, Aenghus Og, Atticus now faces an enemy just as dangerous…a coven of German witches. To defeat them, Atticus must team up with Malina and her crew, a proposition that leaves him conflicted. Can he trust his newfound “allies”? Meanwhile, Atticus is still dealing with the aftermath of the events in Hounded " one of the demons summoned by Aenghus (a particularly powerful fallen angel) is on the loose, not to mention the dangers posed by a group of Bacchants who have taken up residence at a Scottsdale nightclub and are enjoying their own version of late night sushi. I received this book in advance of its release date and devoured it as quickly as I did the first book in the series. HEXED is every bit as good as HOUNDED, and might even be better. Hearne continues the world-building process, introducing deities from other pantheons and new mythical creatures, including the Native American trickster god Coyote, who (rumor has it) will be a recurring character in the series. (If that’s true, I’m pretty excited " how much can Atticus trust a trickster god, and to what new adventures will that lead?) The best minor characters are all still here (including Oberon and the widow " two of my personal favorites), but perhaps what I liked most was the development of Leif, Atticus’s vampire attorney. In HOUNDED, the werewolves got to have most of the fun. Not so in HEXED. The impressive combat abilities Leif displayed in the battle with the Fir Bolgs was just the beginning " wait until you see what he does in the climactic battle of HEXED! I really loved this book. If you read and enjoyed HOUNDED, then you’ll feel the same. The voice and charisma of the main character that made HOUNDED such a breath of fresh air continues here, along with all of the humor and snark of the first installment. I can’t wait for book three!

Hounded Iron Druid Chronicles 01

Kevin Hearne

I was lucky enough to be able to read this book as an ARE (Advanced Reader Edition), and I highly recommend it as both a fast-paced urban fantasy adventure and a witty, snarky look at modern life through the eyes of a 2100 year-old druid. The basic setup is that Atticus, the only druid from ancient Ireland still living and the sole possessor of the knowledge of druid magic, is hiding out in Tempe, Arizona from the pantheon of old Irish gods. Half of the gods want to kill him (he made enemies by stealing Fragarach from the alpha male head honcho a long time ago and has been on the run ever since) and the other half want to use him as a pawn in their power struggles and learn his secrets of long life and protection from magic. As the story begins, his whereabouts are uncovered – but instead of running, Atticus chooses to stand and fight. So begins what is promised to be a trilogy of adventure stories pitting Atticus against deities, witches, demons, and more. The world, where the old gods have power proportional to the strength of their followers’ beliefs, and where gods can appear in human-like form and expose themselves to mortal danger, is reminiscent of the world Neil Gaiman created in American Gods and Anansi Boys. However, Hearne has forged something really special here – a page-turning romp that is as full of action and suspense as it is humor and wit. You’ll read the entire book in one sitting as the time flies by and be left thirsty for the next installment. I hope Hearne is a fast writer, because I can’t wait for the rest of the series.
