Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. This is one of the few books turned musical turned movies out there, and one of the only in that category which I had not read prior to seeing either the musical or the movie. I fell in love with the music as a child, when the movie came out I finally understood the story and fell in love all over again. Although it took me about a month to finish this 1500+ page book, I could not be happier about my decision to delve into the Victor Hugo classic I finally fell in love with the characters - and thought to myself "so THAT is what the story is about!" I will never try to pass this book off as a love story, although it is one. I will never try to pass it off as romantic, although it has its moments. I will never try to pass it off as a war story, although that also is part of the story. This is a story about a man, so desperate to help his family that he winds up in prison - so desperate to save himself he rebuilds his life. You see triumph, you see complete despair, and you see one of the best love stories in literary history. Although this story was originally written in french, the translation shows that Hugo had a way with words. I felt like I was right there, could not put the book down. Although I will not share the context, I will share my favorite quote. “To love or have loved, that is enough. Ask nothing further. There is no other pearl to be found in the dark folds of life.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Happiness

I picked this book up on a whim. The first time I tried to read it, I couldn't get past the first chapter. A few weeks later, after finishing a different book I picked it up again (it was just pulling me towards it I guess). This time, I couldn't put it down. Will Ferguson has amazing character development, the perfect mix of storytelling and really attacking the way the North American ideals shift based on whatever the newest fad is. A look inside the self help genre from a totally fictional perspective. His prose made me laugh, and at times I even shed a few tears. Edwin, the main character, an editor for a major publishing company works his way into publishing the worlds greatest self-help book only to discover that it has the power to cause a major change in how his world (including threats from a mob boss) and the rest of the world functions and exists. Pick it up, get through the first chapter and you will not want to put it down. And once you do, you will want to read everything else every written by Mr. Ferguson!
