Boy Who Loved Anne Frank
by
Ellen Feldman
reaganjt
, June 29, 2012
The Holocaust is a morbid and unpopular historical period, but the horror should NEVER be forgotten. In the book, The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank, we reconnect with Peter. In historically correctiveness, we know Peter died in a concentration camp just days before the liberation, but this book takes us on a journey of 'what might have been' if Peter had survived, and left his identity and his history behind him and recreated his life in America. Much insight can be gained from this compelling book.

Such a delightful book! My adult children grew up on GOODNIGHT MOON and both enjoyed this parody. My 2 year old granddaughter loves Goodnight Moon, and was enthralled with this book...and sat through 3 readings of Goodnight iPad without a break.....a new classic is born....

Stolen Life A Memoir
by
Jaycee Dugard
reaganjt
, September 04, 2011
Jaycee is such a strong women. I read many books about the holocaust, because I am encouraged by the strength the victims exhibit. Jaycee has the same strength. You will be awed by the strength of this young girl and how she endured....although the book contains difficult to accept details, it merely emphasizes the great strength Jaycee found in her memories of her Mom and will keep you cheering when she finally breaks free of her captors.

Aloha Quilt
by
Jennifer Chiaverini
reaganjt
, May 25, 2010
Jennifer Chiaverini has raised the standard for her writing with the continuation of the Elm Creek Quilts novels. Set mostly in Hawaii, history is included in the novel that continues to encourage creative quilt making. Not only did this novel make me want to get my quilting needle back out, but it heightened my desire to visit Hawaii and see some of the 'off the beaten path' areas the locals enjoy.

Walking Boston 34 Tours Through Beantowns Cobblestone Streets Historic Districts Ivory Towers & New Waterfront
by
Robert Todd Felton

, March 08, 2010
I picked up this book a couple weeks before heading to Boston with 4 days for sightseeing. This is an amazing book with current information on little known shops and eateries in the city. Several 'walks' around historic sites, with notes about places to stop in for a snack, or to not miss an amazing artifact. I hope I find a similar book when I get to travel to other cities for a few days!

Thanks For The Memories
by
Cecilia Ahern
reaganjt
, May 07, 2009
Another great book by Cecelia Ahern. I can't wait to see this as a movie! Justin is an art history expert, and terrified of needles. The college campus where he is a guest lecturer is having a blood drive, and in an effort to impress a pretty woman, he agrees to donate blood. Joyce falls down the stairs, losing her unborn child as a result. Her marriage does not survive the loss and she ends up moving back home with her elderly father. Joyce begins to have vivid memories of situations involving a young blond girl, seeing the world through someone's eyes...she speaks latin, Italian, and knows historical facts she had never bothered to think about.... Joyce runs into 'an American' and becomes obsessed, feels she knows him, and is not sure why. Justin sees Joyce, and is instantly drawn to her....

Knitting Circle
by
Ann Hood
reaganjt
, March 24, 2009
Mary is lost. Her 5 year old daughter died, and since then Mary's life has begun to unravel... She ends up at a yarn shop, and finds comfort in knitting.... Her healing is slow, yet she finds ways to begin to help others, and that helps her begin to weave her life back together. Realistic grief is etched in the text which only an author who has herself lost a child can understand and adequately put into words. The healing of the repetition of knitting, and the comfort of knitting friends with their own griefs make you want to pick up a set of knitting needles and create your own masterpiece in yarn.

Still Alice
by
Lisa Genova
reaganjt
, March 22, 2009
Alice is a Harvard professor and world famous linguistics expert. She has an exciting and full life teaching, traveling the world speaking at various conferences, encouraging her husband's famous career and research (also a Harvard professor), and enjoying her three grown children. She begins to forget words (a terrifying thought for a linguistics expert), becomes disoriented and lost a few blocks from her home, and after tests and medical consultations is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The book follows her struggle to maintain normalcy in her life, her emotional struggles and those of her husband, children, co-workers, and students. It is well written, brutally honest, and heart-breaking.

Interesting study completed after a mental institution closed on suitcases left in the attic by some discharged, and other deceased residents. They looked into the suitcases, found some identifying information, and search out the story of the person. The book reveals the shortcomings of the historic mental health system, and makes you wonder....is it better now?

Year of Living Biblically One Mans Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible
by
A J Jacobs
reaganjt
, January 09, 2008
The author was not raised to be religious, but decided to spend a year 'living biblically'. He reads the bible, records the 'rules' he finds in the book, and tries to understand religion/faith based on the writings of the bible. The resulting spiritual journey can confirm and challenge your own beliefs....a good read, for persons of any faith....or lack of faith, wondering what people find in the bible.

Exceptionally well written account of Vietnam POW's. A poor black boy who was the 1st black pilot, and a well educated southern white boy the Vietnamese captors placed in the same small, dark, dirty cell. The white man was forced to care for the seriously injured black man, because the captors thought the two would be further tormented by the racial issues. The two men learned to trust each other, and despite living in the same cell for less then a year, credit each other for their own survival.
