Truly an American legend. Tye had to get out of the way of all the myth and legend to make a workable biography. Dwight Jaynes had a nice recollection from his short stint as a Portland Beaver. I want to reread this book to get geared up for baseball season. Paige's painful returns to Mobile to visit childhood family and friends nearly broke my heart. Tye treated those delicate visits with dignity for all but not discounting Paige's humble beginnings and the fact his mother never approved of his profession even though it brought him some wealth and plenty of fame.

Not my favorite Conroy book but he still has much to say. His sense of humor and his vivid character development stack up. Seems he is writing from a better place now.

Through Eyes Like Mine

Rare to read about a mixed race family set in Oregon, especially Central Oregon. I especially enjoyed the author's perceptions sharpening as she aged. The descriptions of Mt. Bachelor and Scout Lake through the eyes of a child hit the mark. This terrific read left me wanting more.
