Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

T Is For Trespass

Ok, girlfriend! I need a new "fix"! Where's U is for...?? This one is well done, with just the correct amount of "catch up" with stable characters, and a dynomite, on target plot that could be set in the 2000s as well as the 1980s. There are twists and turns a plenty and, while I guessed the ending, that was ok because the ride was fun. If you've never dipped you toe in to the "alphabet", do start with the earlier ones, and have some fun trying to spot some errors as you go along. I know Grafton has said she hates the idea of having her babies turned in to either movies or TV programs, but we, the fans, would love it.

Missing Justice

Ms Burke needs to get with her dad and polish her style a bit. Sorry, but he's a much better writer who thinks it's important to get both character AND setting "right". Also, if you're going to write a novel using a real setting, please make sure you know the geography. In both books set in Portland, Ms Burke gets too many details wrong. Story line and character growth are both weak. Her novel set in NY is better on both counts. I do not live in NY and therefore cannot comment on setting.

Runaway Quilt

Interesting and satisfying until the final chapters, I especially enjoyed the "travel in time" aspect of the story. The ending, however, left me feeling as though the writer either got tired of the story or was setting the reader up for a sequel.
