Amy Goes Surfing
by
Julie Labossiere
KaelebsMomma
, November 29, 2011
In ‘Amy Goes Surfing’ by Julie Labossiere, young Amy has been taking surfing lessons and is ready to go out on her own to test her skills. While Amy is certain that she can do this alone, she’s also very anxious and a bit afraid. With the support of her family and mentor, Amy decides to take the plunge. I felt like this was a great book for children. I read this to my 9 and 11 year old and they loved it. They felt like they could relate to Amy, as to there have been many instances where they too were nervous about something. Anxiety is a normal part of life that everyone will experience many times over. No matter how confident you are, you will always doubt yourself. Julie Labossiere understands this and shows in a positive way that it’s perfectly okay to be scared and if you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything. I believe this book is great for all elementary students. As far as reading alone, I feel that it’s appropriate for third grade level and up. Way to go Julie! Another positive, yet realistic book that children can relate to their everyday lives. I look forward to reading ‘Amy Plays The Violin’ and ‘Amy Volunteers’.

FM for Murder
by
Patricia Rockwell

, November 12, 2011
In ‘FM For Murder’ by Patricia Rockwell, the 2nd book in the Pamela Barnes series, a murder has Pamela back to work in this acoustic mystery. In the early hours of morning, a local deejay is shot to death on air. Unfortunately, the police have no leads on who the shooter is. Hundreds of miles away, the son of a terminally ill carpet manufacturer is keeping a secret that connects him to this baffling crime. With the help of her husband, co-workers and students, will Pamela be able to piece together a detailed puzzle that seems impossible to solve? Will justice be served or will the killer remain at large, the shooting an unsolved mystery? I am a fan of Patricia Rockwell’s writing and have been since reading her first book in this series. I’m also especially fond of series books, as to I become attached to the characters. Patricia has a way of bringing the characters to life and drawing her readers into her stories. Another bonus that I particularly appreciate is a segment at the end of the book, titled ‘Rocky’s Recipes’, where Patricia shares recipes that were mentioned in the book. Patricia writes ‘cozy mysteries’, meaning that you’ll want to cuddle up with this book for a relaxing read. That’s exactly what I did. I read this book from start to finish in one day. It was a page turner that I had a hard time sitting down. I’ll be reading ‘Voice Mail Murder’ next. I can’t get enough! I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a good mystery, minus the chilling thrillers and gore. I’m not fond of eerie books and steer clear of most mystery genre books. Patricia Rockwell’s writing was a pleasant surprise and a welcome read. Even those with the mildest of tolerance can finally sit down with a mystery that they will enjoy!

Skye Object 3270a
by
Linda Nagata
KaelebsMomma
, November 11, 2011
I just finished reading Skye Object 3270a by Linda Nagata, a highly adventurous and futuristic book. Generally, sci-fi stories don’t interest me, but I was instantly hooked after reading the first chapter. A scientist from the city of Silk discovers a lifeboat floating amidst the solar system. Inside is a 2 year old child, who is in a frozen induced sleep and believed to be the only survivor of her kind. She is given the name Skye Object 3270a. Skye has grown up in Silk and is currently an adventurous teen who questions her past and where she came from. With the help of her friends, Skye sets out on a mission to seek answers. Unfortunately in doing so, there are many dangerous tasks involved, as well as knowledge that may jeopardize every life on Deception Well. I felt like Linda Nagata did a fantastic job bringing her readers into this fantasy world. Often I’ve found sci-fi books to be hard to understand, but this is not the case with Skye Object. The story reads smoothly and draws its readers in. I appreciate the friendships and coming of age struggles that Linda’s characters must face. She gives a realistic feel to building relationships and overcoming dilemmas. Her characters are fun loving teens in an other than ordinary, but exciting future world. I would recommend this book to mature middle grade students, as to I think it may be a little advanced in terms of reading level. However, the content is appropriate for this age group, unlike many books geared toward this crowd. Likewise, I think YA ‘s and adults will enjoy this book, because it’s fast paced and packed with action. Skye Object 3270a is certainly one of the best books I’ve read and I encourage anyone who enjoys an adventurous story to pick this one up. Don’t let the genre discourage you if you are like me and not a sci-fi fan. Since reading this book in a matter of a couple days, I’ve already looked Linda Nagata up and will be delving into her other stories as well.

13 Days: The Dark Circle
by
Lippi, K.
KaelebsMomma
, November 10, 2011
I’ve recently read ’13 Days: The Dark Circle’ by K. Lippi. In this book 16 teenagers are chosen to compete in a reality television show. Their mission is to be the last one standing. Their prize is take home one million dollars. The only thing standing in their way is the St. Clara Asylum where massacres and suicides abound by many and this is where they will call home for 13 days. Unfortunately, everyone begins to feel the stress of their adventure. There are lies, love triangles and peculiar happenings from the beginning. Each time another player is brutally taken away, the other cast members become more paranoid. Could St. Clara’s actually be haunted and could they be involved in more than just an ordinary game show? I honestly loved this book. It was a real page turner. I think that K. Lippi did an excellent job keeping the right amount of suspense present and her readers on the edge of their seat. While I wouldn’t go as far as saying this is morbid tale, it’s certainly packed full of mystery. However, the editing in this book was not very well done. I’m a stickler for these types of mistakes and it actually takes away from the book in my opinion. There were inconsistencies throughout the book, misspellings, overuse of certain words and grammatical errors. My advice would be to check and double check before publishing a book. I think this would be a great read for mature teens and young adults. As a 30 something adult myself, I enjoyed the storyline immensely. Now for the criticism… As I mentioned a couple times above, I really enjoyed this book, mostly. The ending felt rushed. I felt a complete disconnect in my feelings for the book by the ending. I’ve never finished a book that I’ve felt more unsatisfied with the ending, then this book. If you’re looking for a happy ending, this book certainly is not for you. I found myself flipping through the last blank pages, looking for something, anything to actually end this story. My only hope is that K. Lippi ended ‘The Dark Circle’ in this manner to follow it up with a sequel. That being said, if a sequel is produced, I will buy a copy hot off the presses. I need better closure! In retrospect, the ending does have an unexpected paranormal twist that leaves you saying…”oooooh.” Overall, even with the issues that I found, I still enjoyed reading this book. I think K. Lippi has some great ideas and I hope to see more from her in the future and I look forward to reading ‘Awakening’.

Bingoed: An Essie Cobb Senior Sleuth Mystery
by
Patricia Rockwell
KaelebsMomma
, October 24, 2011
I had the pleasure of reading ‘Bingoed’ by Patricia Rockwell, a novel about a 90 year old super sleuth named Essie Cobb. Essie and her “partners in crime” suspect that foul play is involved when one of their fellow residents at Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility collapses and falls into a coma after winning at Bingo. The theories run rampant when spry Essie and her friends put their mind to solving this mystery. Mrs. Rockwell hit a homerun with ‘Bingoed’. The storyline will keep you coming back for more. This is definitely a mystery read that you don’t want to miss. Curl up with a cozy blanket for this cozy read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good “whodunit” mystery. People of all ages will enjoy this book. I appreciate Mrs. Rockwell’s mysteries, because they are not too graphic or intimidating. Anyone who shies away from a mystery due to gripping content will appreciate this book. I think my grandmother would get a kick out of ‘Bingoed’ and enjoy it as much as I did. Patricia Rockwell is a quick rising author, whose writing will captivate you. I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Don’t miss out on the adventures that Essie Cobb and her quick witted friends “wheel” themselves into. This page turner will make you laugh out loud, as well as keep you guessing and waiting to see what will come next. I’m anticipating reading more about Essie’s adventures.

In the third epic book ‘Passion’ by Lauren Kate, Luce decides not to let destiny prevail and instead makes it her personal mission to discover what is keeping her and Daniel apart lifetime after lifetime. Luce travels back in time to witness and personally experience each of her past lives with Daniel and must suffer through each tragic ending. Luce is determined to break the cycle of the curse once and for all. Lauren Kate is has amazing talent and has brought the characters from the ‘Fallen’ series alive. Once you begin reading this series, you become immediately addicted. In her latest book, Lauren Kate skillfully gives her readers the satisfaction that they crave, while still keeping the element of surprise looming on the horizon. If you’re a fan of vampire or paranormal books and haven’t yet discovered this series, you’re missing out. The ‘Fallen’ series has rapidly climbed to the top of the ladder and become a favorite among young adults. I’ll go a step further and recommend this book to adult readers as well. I’m 35 and I’ll admit to being sucked in. Will Luce and Daniel ever be able to live out their lives together? Will they be able to break the curse that has been tormenting them for so long, before everything they know goes up in flames? I can’t wait for Lauren Kate’s next book in this series, titled ‘Fallen in Love’ to watch the future unfold and see what is lurking around the next corner.

Christmas Village
by
Jack Gilhooly
KaelebsMomma
, September 13, 2011
In Jack Gilhooly’s ‘Christmas Village’ Rudy and Amanda get to find out what it’s like to live in a Christmas Village. Each year the children look forward to looking at Grandpa’s village and seeing what he’s added or removed from the previous year. This year; however, they get a surprise they weren’t expecting when they are transported into the village. They must learn to navigate between two lives and two families and a handful of new challenges and adventures. Unfortunately for them, the village townspeople are very unhappy when their wise man and library disappear. Can Rudy and Amanda convince their Grandpa to believe the trips they are making are real? And will he restore order to the “Christmas Village”? I thought Jack Gilhooly did a fantastic job bringing the ‘Christmas Village’ to life. The characters were very lively and the storyline was easy and pleasant to follow. I also appreciate that Mr. Gilhooly gave us a Christmas story, without a traditional twist. I believe this book is for children and adults of all ages. If you like the magic of Christmas, then this story is for you. I read this book aloud to my children and husband and it was equally enjoyed by all. In fact, when it was time to pause between chapters, I often met resistance. My children sat completely quiet and engrossed throughout the entire book. I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity to read this book. It was a treat for us, almost like Christmas in July! Mr. Gilhooly writes to children and captures their attention. I look forward to reading more in the future and am hoping for a sequel to ‘Christmas Village’.

Runaway Storm
by
D. E. Knobbe
KaelebsMomma
, September 13, 2011
In ‘Runaway Storm’ by D.E. Knobbe, you’re swept along on an exhilarating adventure with Nate who decides to take the fate of his summer into his own hands. Nate, our 17 year old protagonist, has been forced to deal with the misfortune of his parent’s separation. Much to his dismay, Nate has been forced to move away from Canada to New York where his mother took a job and a new boyfriend. Nate is looking forward to him and his father spending the summer together on a much anticipated kayak adventure. However, when Nate finds out that his summer plans have been blown out of the water, he decides to take matters into his own hands. D.E. Knobbe is a wonderful writer. The words flow together in a wonderful sea of perfection. Knobbe really understands and relays adolescence coming of age in ‘Runaway Storm’. This book is a page turner that readers of all ages will appreciate. Younger readers will also relate to the feelings portrayed by Nate. This book screams ‘rite of passage’ as young Nate makes the trip of a lifetime and one that he won’t soon forget. He meets many along the way who help him reach maturity and some who are dangerous. He navigates through one of the worst storms of his life, both physically and mentally. D.E. Knobbe has a winner with her Runaway Series. This was one of the best, most action packed, heartfelt, realistic books that I’ve read in a long while. I can guarantee that you won’t be dissatisfied with this one. Pick up a copy or two for the young adult in your life. I myself anticipate the release of ‘Runaway Fire’. It can’t come out fast enough and once it does hit the shelves, I’ll be eagerly waiting in line with my copy.

Friends Forever: Adventures of Henderson
by
Anita Hilliker Kieslich
KaelebsMomma
, August 01, 2011
Today I had the pleasure of reading ‘Friends Forever’ by Anita Hilliker Kieslich with my ten year old daughter. This story is about a boy named Kevin who befriends a sick duckling. They share a special bond and have overcome many obstacles together. However, when faced with separation, the two friends learn a valuable lesson. Mrs. Kieslich did a fantastic job conveying her message in this book. It’s obvious that she is well educated and understands how to provide positive coping strategies for children when they are faced with loss, be it the death of a family member, friend or pet or moving away from someone who is a special. While this book does not directly deal with life and death situations, the lesson it presents is universal. I feel that this book is wonderful for children of various ages from very young to pre-teen. As a parent, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book aloud and found the positive nature refreshing. My ten year old daughter loved the story and in her own words said, “Aww, that was a cute story”. I feel like books communicate the message that we need as individuals at different times in our lives and the moral behind this story is that no matter how you are separated from someone, they will always still be with you in your heart and everything will be okay. My favorite line is the last sentence that says, ‘miles can separate friends but can never separate friendship”. What a heartfelt message that everyone should read and remember. I appreciate Mrs. Kieslich’s delicate approach to a subject that can be very touchy. I would urge everyone with children to buy a copy of this book to help your child during difficult times. If there’s one thing in life that we can count on, it’s that change occurs often and those we love come and go in and out of our lives. Memories last a lifetime and it’s important in times of sadness to remember that you really haven’t lost anyone, as long as they are alive in your heart.

Fallen 02 Torment
by
Lauren Kate
KaelebsMomma
, June 14, 2011
In “Torment” by Lauren Kate, Luce is sent to the prestigious California school Shoreline by Daniel in order to keep her safe from the Outcasts " immortals who are not a part of Heaven or Hell and who are hunting Luce down to kill her. At Shoreline, Luce joins the unique Nephilim students who are the children of fallen angels and humans. There she makes friends with others who posses unusual talents. It is there that Luce meets Miles, the normal, friendly, gorgeous, down to earth boy who makes Luce second guess everything. It is here where Luce learns more about the shadows that have always haunted her and how they can help her glimpse her past lives. It is also here where Luce questions her relationship with Daniel and his honesty to her, or the lack thereof. Everything that Luce believed in is being challenged and her world is changing rapidly. I think that Lauren Kate writes with intensity that draws the readers into the story so deeply that they become part of the story themselves. “Torment” is another well written, entrancing continuation to the Fallen novels. Lauren Kate has ventured into territory unlike no other and has thus captivated her audience. This book is recommended for YA followers. However, you’ll also find romance entwined with jealousy and paranormal fiction. Personally, I didn’t think I was interested in this series after reading the synopsis, but my cousin raved about them so much, that I took a chance. I’m glad that I did, because these have climbed their way to the top of my favorites list. As I mentioned in my earlier review of “Fallen”, I feel that Lauren Kate is a force to be reckoned with. I think that she found a niche that yearned to be discovered and she did it well. It is clear that her career as a promising writer is only in the beginning stages and that we will be hearing much, much more from her in the future. I’m looking forward to reading “Passion” and seeing what will become of Luce and Daniel and their star crossed love for one another. Fallen angels are the new objects of affection!

Fallen (Fallen, #1)
by
Lauren Kate
KaelebsMomma
, June 04, 2011
“Fallen” written by Lauren Kate is about a young girl named Luce, who has bigger problems then deciding on what to wear on her first day of school. Unfortunately, her first day of school happens to be at the Sword & Cross, a reform school, where everything is bleak and depressing. That is, everything except Daniel, who Luce is immediately drawn to by some force bigger then attraction. Daniel…who makes it painfully obvious that he has no interest in Luce whatsoever. Unable to accept Daniel’s disinterest, Luce becomes emerged in her desire to find out more about this mysterious boy and awakens more details then she ever bargained for. Lauren Kate brings something new and dangerously exciting to the table. “Fallen” is a gripping page turner that will engulf you before you can finish the first chapter. Lauren Kate has opened up a unique world that will quickly enrapture readers. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA fiction, especially so if you enjoy paranormal reads. “Fallen” is a thriller with a forbidden romance. It’s dangerous, dark and gothic. Laruen Kate has introduced something just as interesting as Vampires and Werewolves, something that quite possibly will rival their popularity. “Fallen” is a tantalizing, addictive book that you will want to pick up. I was so caught up in the storyline that I read this one in a day. Lauren Kate’s writing is solid and I venture a guess that this is only the beginning of a very long and successful writing career. I’m looking forward to following along and delving into each work that she presents. Next up, “Torment”. I’m anxious to crack this open and let it captivate me completely.

Sounds of Murder
by
Patricia Rockwell
KaelebsMomma
, May 31, 2011
I just finished reading “Sounds of Murder” by Patricia Rockwell. This is the first segment in the Pamela Barnes Acoustic Mystery series. In “Sounds of Murder”, Psychology Professor Pamela discovers the body of her fellow employee and renowned researcher, Charlotte Clark murdered in the schools computer lab. While Pamela, or none of the other Professors, was very fond of Charlotte, it becomes her personal mission to avenge Charlotte’s death and discover her killer. Being an authority in acoustics, Pamela is able to find an accidental recording of Charlotte’s death that the investigators miss. Using the sound waves, Pamela slowly pieces together the mystery and comes terrifyingly close to becoming a victim herself. For an amateur sleuth, Pamela certainly gives this well paced novel a uniqueness that sets itself apart from others. I absolutely devoured this book. I started it and finished it overnight. Patricia Rockwell is a brilliant story teller and very well written. “Sounds of Murder” was easy to read and enjoyable. Anyone who enjoys a good mystery will enjoy reading “Sounds of Murder”. For those of you who may be a little standoffish by the title or the genre, as often some are, being concerned that the plot may be too gory and chilling, I urge you to reconsider. Patricia Rockwell takes great care in writing articulately and with good taste. I’m positive that this book will quickly become a favorite to anyone looking for an intriguing, satisfying read. Not only is there excitement with the turn of each page, but there is humor and romance that really make this book stand out. Furthermore, this is one mystery adventure that consists of only clean language, which is in and of itself, a breath of fresh air. Patricia Rockwell has begun her ascent towards the top of my favorite reading material. Mrs. Rockwell shows great potential and I’m certain that we will see more of her in the future. I personally, look forward to reading more of the Pamela Barnes Mystery series, starting with “FM For Murder”, the second installment.

Ad/HD Success! Solutions to Boosting Self-Esteem the Diary Method Ages 7-17
by
Kerin Bellak Adams
KaelebsMomma
, May 31, 2011
I have recently read Kerin Bellak-Adams’ book titled AD/HD SUCCESS! SOLUTIONS FOR BOOSTING SELF-ESTEEM " THE DIARY METHOD. In this resource book, Kerin thoughtfully explains the benefits of the diary method for children and their care givers. The main objective is to raise self-esteem in children who are suffering from ADD or AD/HD. Karin stresses the importance of children being able to acknowledge the things that they do that are right, rather than focus on what they can’t do or have trouble doing. It is her hope that in completing the exercises contained within the booklet, parents and children will grow together into more trusting and solid relationships. I think this is a great book that can be utilized for all children and not just those with a learning disability. The diary pages enable children to be honest in their assessments of themselves. Most of the material is very positive, asking children to identify what they did during the day that they are proud of. Only a few pages actually allow children to point out their faults. While I think that in order to correct what’s wrong, one must be aware that it’s wrong, I also think that harping on it will only cause negativity. Considering that this book is written with children in mind who already struggle, I feel that the combination is effective. Furthermore, not only do the diary pages offer suggestions to get children actively thinking, but there is also space for your child to write in their own thoughts. Another thing that I find appealing about this book is that on the back of every diary page, there is an uplifting quote. In addition, there’s a printable page for teachers to use daily. I think that standard behavior reports are inefficient for a child with ADD or AD/HD and the one included for use here is a much better tool. Your child will also be able to answer questions based on how high (or low) their self-esteem is. The point of this is by the end of completion of the diary pages, your child will see improvements in their self-esteem after completing this page again. Children will also be able to rate their feelings periodically as well as fill in a page titled “if your kids could say what is really on their minds” which is your child’s feelings on what they need from you to help them. Additionally, there is section specifically for parents to be able to evaluate themselves and learn to improve or perhaps try something different to better support their child. The best part of all of this is that these pages can be printed out online for repeated use. I recommend this book to all parents and educators. As I mentioned, I don’t think your child needs to have a disability to reap the benefits from this book. The recommended ages are 7 to 17, depending on your child’s maturity level. I really appreciate the approach that Kerin took. Many times you’ll find numerous materials with scientific data relating to ADD and AD/HD. You’ll even find published opinions on how to best help your child cope. I really think that by giving your child control by allowing them to speak candidly within these pages, is one of the best methods I’ve seen. No one knows how your child feels, better than your child. Allow them to express themselves and learn to adjust to their needs. No two children are alike and no one book with opinions is going to be the solution. Kerin ultimately understands this and has offered a hands on approach that is certain to produce results.

Rendezvous Rock
by
Rickey Bray
KaelebsMomma
, May 27, 2011
In Rendezvous Rock by Rickey Bray, young Eric and Susan meet while vacationing and fall madly in love. Eric, at only 15 years old has never experienced the feelings that he has developed for the mesmerizing green-eyed, flaming red haired beauty that is strikingly different from anyone he’s ever met before. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Eric knows that his adoration for Susan surpasses everything else and agrees to marry her. For Susan, a young witch, this is the beginning of a prophesy that will potentially change the entire world and this binding is worth the sacrifices that will be made before she is able to spend a lifetime with her soul mate. For Eric, his naive agreement to Susan’s terms will test his strength and ultimately draw him into the mysterious world of The Three Circles. Rickey Bray did an outstanding job at captivating his audience in this well written fantasy. The story line will consume your thoughts well after you’ve put the book down. The beginning of the book starts out a little slow and is quite confusing. I urge you to continue reading. Soon everything falls into place and the words and sentences flow easily. Mr. Bray uses such immaculate vocabulary that I think some may be intimidated upon initial inspection of this book. However, heed my advice when I say that once you’ve read a few chapters, you’ll feel completely at ease and the verse will marry with the story and create a perfect symmetry. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates an involved plot, such as myself. Rickey Bray certainly does not skimp on the details, which makes for a rather long, but well written read. Anyone who likes romance entwined with paranormal fiction is going to love this story as well. Also those interested in witches, fantasy and sci-fi should get a copy of Rendezvous Rock immediately. I can easily say that Rendezvous Rock is one of my favorite reads to date and that’s saying a lot. I was so spellbound by this book that I had a hard time putting it down. After I did put it down, the story and characters would still course through my brain. This is not a book that you will soon forget. The storyline is lingering. I can’t say enough about this book to do it justice. While the story ends entirely and leaves you with a sense of closure, I beg for the story to continue! Rickey Bray is sitting on a gold mine and I sincerely hope that he continues the story where it left off. I see a series in the making! If not, with much regret, I’ll always long for more! I will continue to follow Mr. Bray’s phenomenal writing and look forward to see what he does in the future.

Princess and Missy's Magical Adventures: The Crystal Heart
by
Michelle Nicole Martin
KaelebsMomma
, May 26, 2011
I had the pleasure of reading Michelle Nicole Martin’s delightful story called Princess and Missy’s Magical Adventures: The Crystal Heart, to my children. In this adorable book, Princess faces a scary situation when she is separated from her family and ultimately lost. On her journey to find her family, Princess meets and helps people in need. Her good deeds are noticed by Missy, a charming multi-colored butterfly who befriends her and asks for her help. Princess is happy to help Missy and her friends fulfill tasks that help others who may be hurting or to enrich their lives. However, they must be careful because Jaith the Joy Stealer is lurking nearby and wishes to intervene to wreak havoc. I felt like Michelle Nicole Martin did a wonderful job with her publication. While the story takes place involving several scary settings, the mood always stays light and optimistic. I think this is a brilliant tactic to use when writing for children. Even though this book is clearly a fantasy, I think that children can relate to the examples sometimes better then when they are given real life scenarios. Both of my children enjoyed this book and they are ages 8 and 10. However, I do think that the storyline is geared more for younger children. Children enjoy reading about magical and enchanting lands. As a parent, I appreciate the vivid words and description used throughout this book. I also appreciate the simplicity used to convey such strong moral attributes such as kindness, friendship and having a pure heart. The only criticism that I have is that Princess doesn’t find her family by the end of the story. I completely appreciate leaving some suspense to build up the next book in the series, but when we read the last page, the story just didn’t feel finished. It left us wanting more information and quite possibly, that was the goal. All in all, I can’t think of enough nice things to say about The Crystal Heart. It was an endearing, whimsical fairytale that positively shows that all things can have a happy ending. I’ll be looking forward to the second book in this series, The Ruby Door.

Body Finder 02 Desires of the Dead

Kimberly Derting
KaelebsMomma
, May 08, 2011
In “Desires of the Dead” by Kimberly Derting, Violet Ambrose is drawn to the echoes of the dead, who long to be noticed and put to rest properly. This specific echo is that of a young boy which draws attention to Violet in a big way and threatens her secretive gift and way of life. Bravo to Kimberly Derting for creating a sequel that is just as intriguing and suspenseful as the original. The storyline progresses in such a way that one will follow along easily and quickly become engrossed in the book. Kimberly Derting is a prolific writer and I expect much more success in her future. This book is intended for the Young Adult audience or anyone who appreciates a good YA work of fiction. Those who are equally interested in paranormal and mystery thrillers, as well as romantic fiction will enjoy this book and its intricate combination of each. It’s my opinion that this series is a must read for everyone. There is so much variety that I’m certain no one will be left disappointed. One of my favorite things about this storyline is actually the echoes and imprints that only Violet can detect. You’ll be surprised that many have been experienced in your own life. For anyone who may have missed “The Body Finder”, I recommend that you pick it up now and start the adventure that will have you coming back for more. I anxiously await the next story of Violet’s life and what changes and experiences lay ahead for her.

I adore Alyson Noel’s books based on the Riley Bloom. Radiance and Shimmer tell the story of 12 year old Riley who met her demise, in her opinion, way too early. Now she has to learn to accept her new “life” in the Here & Now and her position as a Soul Catcher. Having successfully completed her last task, Riley, her dog Buttercup and guide Bodhi were sent on vacation to a tropical island. Riley comes across more than sandy beaches in this lively journey. Riley meets Rebecca, a young ghost, who at first glance appears radiant and innocent. Looks are not always what they seem, Riley learns as she is thrust into a haunting world. Can Riley escape the nightmares before they consume her? I thoroughly enjoy reading Alyson Noel’s books. She is an extraordinary story teller who has the ability to immerse you within the pages of each well written chapter. I recommend this book for adolescent to YA readers. Having said that, I don’t fit in either category, but I love The Riley Bloom Books. I’ve followed Allyson’s Immortal Series and really like that she branched off and created something different. She took a character from the background and made them the star in their own series and has allowed her readers the opportunity to follow along with a familiar character from a totally different perspective. My favorite aspect of these books is the way that Alyson Noel deals with the afterlife. She makes it seem believable and realistic. I love how everyone fulfills their destiny in a unique and fitting way that’s personal to them. After reading the teaser for Dreamland, I’m already anticipating its release. Alyson Noel has captured my mind with her delightful and imaginative writing.

Vampire Academy 06 Last Sacrifice
by
Richelle Mead

Richelle Mead did a fantastic job with her final book in the Vampire Academy Novels, Last Sacrifice. The storyline picks up right where Spirit Bound left off. Richelle tells the story of what happened when Rose was taken away by the Guardians. She also mesmerizes you with the love triangle between Rose, Adrian and Dimitri. If you’ve come to know and love the characters in this series like I have, make sure you read this one. Richelle outdid herself. Last Sacrifice is my favorite thus far and that’s saying something since I adore the entire series. She has a way of pulling you into the book and making you feel like the characters are real. Obviously this is a YA and teen series, but I have to tell you that I’m neither of these and can’t seem to get enough. I guess it’s possible that I’m living vicariously through their lives, but more than likely, it’s just because Richelle knows her stuff! My opinion is that if you haven’t started reading A Vampire Academy series, that you do so NOW. You will not be disappointed. My favorite part in Last Sacrifice is….(eeeek) Dimitri. (I won’t risk saying anything more for the fear of giving too much away!) However, I will say that most of the ending was predictable. MOST of it. Even with that being said, I’m pleased with the outcome. Our characters are evolving and growing up and the change in them is obvious. I really think Richelle did a great job with the finality of the series. While I look forward to reading Bloodlines, I’m going to miss this series. It’s bittersweet. I know change is necessary in order to continue with progress, but I imagine that I’ll revisit these books many times over.

Billy Had to Move: A Foster Care Story
by
Theresa Ann Fraser

In the book Billy Had To Move, Billy has been sent to live with his grandmother for his own safety by a social worker. Sadly, Billy grandmother passes away and Billy is left with no other family to care for him and is placed in a foster home. This book shows grief, fear, anxiety and finally acceptance and love. I think that Theresa Ann Fraser did a wonderful job fulfilling her purpose with this story. Many children are put through “the system”, by no fault of their own. Theresa shows the perspective of the child. I really think the point of this book is to help other children who are in a similar predicament. It shows that the feelings they possess are normal. It also teaches them that it’s okay to open up to others who are trying to help them. It’s my opinion that Billy Had To Move would be a great book for any child going through foster care and their caregivers. Also, I believe this is an excellent book to share with children who have been adopted. As well as siblings and/or children living within the foster home who are now having the share their parents. Personally, this story holds my heartstrings. My niece was fostered a couple of times, before she ended up in our home, where ultimately we were able to adopt her. As her caregiver, while I think I understand what she’s going through, I’m aware that I will never fully understand. I think this story helped all of us understand a little better. I have a lot of respect for Ms. Fraser for tackling such a sensitive subject and doing so with such a genuine understanding.

House Of Night 08 Awakened

I just finished reading Awakened, A House of Night Novel that follows fledgling High Priestess, Zoey Redbird, after her soul was shattered. Zoey must find the strength to return to her home in Tulsa with her Warrior and Consort, Stark to intervene in the evil lurking caused by Neferet and Kalona. It is my belief that P.C. and Kristin Cast carried out our expectations well in this latest novel, which keeps you hanging on for more. They use a witty writing style that captures the essence of youth and thus is appealing which enables them to get their point across to a wide variety of audiences. Generally, this book is written for young adults and teenagers. That being said, I’m in my thirties and continue to faithfully follow the series. I really love the idea behind the HON series. From the first book that I read, I was hooked. It’s my opinion that the book uses quite a few clichés repeatedly, which may actually be part of the draw to the series. For me, it actually became just a little too droning. It would be my recommendation to continue usage of these clever clichés, but to exercise a little repetition. Of course, this is only my opinion. The HON series is original and different, which makes them stand out. Even though Awakened was not my favorite of the series, I still had a hard time putting this book down once I got started. P.C. and Kristin are genius writers and mega superstars due to their successful imaginations. I “heart” them and the HON series!

Immortals 05 Night Star

Will their love stand the test of time? Our favorite couple, Damon and Ever faces down some pretty serious demons in the latest book, Night Star. Will an age old secret be the end of their lasting love or will Haven succeed in ripping them apart? I think Alyson Noel is a genius. Night Star was everything I wanted it to be and MORE. Her creative writing keeps me on the edge of my seat, anticipating the next turn of the page. This book is written for young adults and follows a similar route to popular vampire stories. However; I’m in my thirties and am captivated by The Immortals series. Personally, I must admit that I’m addicted to this series. It’s by far, my favorite! My favorite part of Night Star was obviously when Haven was taken down. I’ve been waiting for that to happen for a while now. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys vampire lore or YA romance. This book has everything you’re looking for. Alyson, thank you for an awesome book! You deserve to be rating up there with the top authors. The Immortals series is a twist that YA fiction needed. It’s a breath of fresh air! I’m looking forward to the next book! Keep writing!

Annabelle's Secret: A Story about Sexual Abuse
by
Barth, Amy
KaelebsMomma
, March 17, 2011
I decided to read Annabelle’s Secret to my children (aged 8 and 10) this week. I thought it was an important topic that we should cover again. I also liked the fact that instead of me telling my children about inappropriate touches and behaviors, I was able to read them a story that had characters that they could relate to. The plot in Annabelle’s Secret follows Annabelle from the age of 7 through 14. Annabelle was touched inappropriately by a neighborhood boy. The story tells her point of view and the issues that she experienced. It also encourages children to tell someone they trust. I think Amy Barth did a wonderful job at telling a story that many shy away from. I think that Amy’s writing is appropriate for younger children, as far as comprehension. However, the book was quite lengthy and I’m not sure younger children would be able to follow along by themselves. I actually think this is a good thing, because I feel like this is a topic best approached with adults because there will certainly be questions that follow. That being said, older or mature children would have no problems reading this book. I personally feel that Annabelle’s Secret is great for younger children, through teens. When children are abused, age doesn’t play a factor and it’s our responsibility to give children the knowledge they need. If we continue to make the topic taboo, children of any age will be too afraid to come forward if something like this should happen to them. I appreciate the honesty that this story deals with. I think that Amy covered quite a few of the issues that one might experience and the prolonged affects of sexual abuse. I would definitely recommend this book to others who are looking to educate children. One of my favorite quotes in this book is the last one which reads, “I’m just wonderfully me!” Annabelle has learned that she can cope with what happened to her with the support from others. Bravo Amy. Many kudos to you for stepping up and approaching this head on with such a positive story.
