Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Heir of Night. by Helen Lowe

This kind of speculative fiction holds my attention because it builds the world sufficiently for me to see the space and then launches into the characters so that I identify with them, the good and the not so good. We meet the main character, coming-of-age in in the massive stone castle where her family has grown up. She is aware of power conflicts but not directly involved, til now. She is the heir in a kingdom that is connected to those around it by history, family, and war. She is finding her powers (yes, wonderfully tangible magic) and learning how and why to control them. I loved her world of dark fortresses, bright and far lands to explore, and friends to be made and kept both from her own realm and intersecting realms. I couldnt put it down, and look forward to the next book in what I hope is a long series.

When a title promises to hold my hand week by week, guide my journaling, and the outcome is not only better than I've done (which was very poorly) but "the most bountiful harvest ever", I'm in for the adventure.
