Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership
by
James Comey

I was fortunate enough to see Mr. Comey when he came to Revolution Hall for his Powell's book event, and was very impressed. His book reads like he speaks, and I enjoyed both the book and the talk very much. Mr. Comey is down to earth, doesn't shy away from the fact that he's made a few mistakes, and his take on the various Presidential administrations and events he has been involved in are, as far as I can tell, spot on. This book is an enjoyable read. Mr Comey's excellent sense of humor is evident throughout the book, and makes it entertaining as well as informative. I also appreciate his loyalty to ethics instead of individuals. I highly recommend this book.

Hollow City

Hollow City is even more exciting than its prequel, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and I gave the first book 5 stars! More adventure, more in-depth information about the world of the Peculiars, and some new, equally lovable characters. Best of all, it promises that there will be a third book coming soon! Keep up the great work, Ransom Riggs!

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children

This is definitely my best read for 2011. Simultaneously charming and thrilling, it is suitable for older children and adults alike. The characters are made all the more vivid by the vintage photos with a twist that are generously sprinkled throughout the book and they sync up perfectly with the story. There is never any doubt which photo goes with which passage in the book. I eagerly await the sequel.

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children

This is the most delightful, enchanting, and hard to put down book I have come across since I finished the Harry Potter series! One of those books I read on the bus, and even while walking up quiet residential streets. I could not put it down while walking from point A to point B (except to check traffic when crossing streets of course). The photographs mesh perfectly with the story line. The pictures themselves are great examples of trick photography used before the digital age (or is that girl on the cover REALLY hovering a few inches off the ground?)

The life of a great mathematician/philosopher in graphic novel format. Amazing! Since I love math, philosophy, and logic, I was delighted with the concept that a mathematician/philosopher is a logician!
