Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Once upon a time, above ground, a thirty something girl found herself unemployed unexpectedly. Suddenly, she found herself with more spare time than she was even remotely interested in. The girl went through all of the books on her bookshelf and quickly ran out of rereading material, then asked her friends and family. Enter the worlds of Hugh Howey’s imagination on a very strongly worded recommendation from her brilliant sister. Alright, enough of that. I can’t continue in third person, I’m not an author… Hugh’s worlds are all amazing, but the Wool Omnibus was the first work of his I read. It’s still my favorite. Wool is well written, rereadable, and completely engrossing. I’ll admit that I’m one of those people that can be drawn into a world completely, forgoing sustenance and sleep until no more words remain to sustain me. Incidentally, I usually finish a book very hungry, stinky, and incredibly tired. With Wool, I was those things, but I was also wrung out emotionally - in a very, very good way. Hugh does an astounding job of making his characters relatable and the scenes vivid. I can still remember specific details from certain scenes that make my heart stop in recollection. It’s been a long time since an author did that to me - especially a new author or one who can still be referred to as an “indie”! Hugh Howey is the epitome of what I love about the intertubes and the world we live in today. I have had the privilege of reading a self published novel, falling in love, and exploring an author I might never have heard about otherwise. Thanks, series of tubes, for allowing my imagination another outlet!

This book showed me I can walk through solid objects. Unfortunately, physics continues to thwart me but I keep believing and trying!!! In all honesty, the book is very good and calls on us to not take others' word for granted that something ISN'T possible... so I'm going to go swimming in the ceiling now.
