Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Learning To Live In The World Earth Poem
by
William Stafford
Swede
, September 20, 2011
I am trying to live "by the light [I} find," and often I locate such living through the poetry of William Stafford, Billy Collins and Oregon's current poet laureate Paulann Peterson. In his indeed "earthy" language Stafford tells me that "the world speaks everything to us." He's right, as always. We all need to keep tuned to these seers. I frankly can't get through the miasma we find ourselves in in 2011. My life is still being formed by their penetration into truth.

Ballistics
by
Billy Collins
Swede
, September 20, 2011
As I move into the 74th year of my life, I pick up any page in "Ballistics" by Billy Collins and find the line "Crashing through the iron gates of life is what it is all about" and reflect on the September 17 murder of my nephew Sean. He did just that and died trying to get funds to send for his wife in the Philippines. He "drained the cup of life to the dregs" so I am strangely comforted. Poetry by Collins is healing. Don't miss this collection. You can't forget his lines, his meaning. Dolores I. Dinneen
