Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Animal Farm
by
George Orwell

Like his other classic, "1984", George Orwell delivers a commentary on alot more than what's going on on the surface of the story... This particular tale involves a farm, a farmer, and a group of animals on that farm that think they know better, so they decide to get rid of the farmer... Their goal is to live in an "equal" society, but, as with all societies, heirarcy eventually rears its ugly head, and shows us the futility of their statement that "all animals are equal", because, as Orwell himself puts it..."some are more equal than others..."...

one of the most gut-wrenching examples of a man’s life spiraling out of control amidst the effort of trying to find some... ...and the control he seeks is within his writing... brutal and beautiful...a masterpiece of the inner soul and the inner mind caught within a dialogue of closed-off pretensions and open revelations...

Animal Farm

"...some are more equal than others..."...that is a line from George Orwell's brilliant social commentary, "Animal Farm"... The basic story involves the animals on a farm who want to run the farmer out of town, so that they can run the farm, equally, and fairly... but, as time moves on, all is not right in the animal kingdom, and, like humans, they begin to show their true colors... with an exceptional thread to our own behvior, such as his equally brilliant "1984", once again Mr. Orwell proves to be a keen storyteller with one eye on his pages, and one eye on the world...

Restless Pilgrim The Spiritual Journey Of Bob Dylan
by

i love this book...even though i already knew alot about dylan's 'christian years', when he recorded his trinity trilogy, "Slow Train Coming", "Saved" and "Shot Of Love", while reading this i noticed that scott pilgrim takes you on a more in-depth, personal study, of what actually drove dylan to contemplate such a strong statement in his career, and how it was driving him all along, throughout his entire songwriting process...highly recommended for any dylan fan, but ya' don't have to be one to enjoy it...
