Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Moving Finger

Agatha Christie

A charming, small-town murder mystery - nasty, anonymous letters bring long-held suspicions into the light of day. Each villager seems so convincing a suspect, this can only be Agatha Christie. If Miss Marple had narrated, she would have seen the culprit a mile away. She does swoop in at the end and, of course, saves the day. This book has more resolution than other of Christie's novels; a satisfying way to close the case

Turn of Mind

Is there any narrator less reliable than one who can't trust her own memory? Though Jennifer's descent into dementia is peaceful, she is prone to aggressive outbursts that she completely forgets. Did she murder her neighbor? Can she be held accountable for violent action she may have taken against someone she barely recognized? The trip through Jennifer's perception and memory is terrifying and fascinating to the very end.

Required as a textbook, and it saved me more than once. As a person with minimal spatial and visually artistic sensibilities, eventually I ran for the hills, as far from an architecture degree as I could. This book was so nice to look at that I kept it even after I changed my major.
