Sing You Home

Jodi Picoult

Like all Jodi Piccoult books, this one can be a bit heavy handed but the subject matter is so involving and thought-provoking, you won't care. After battling infertility unsuccessfully and following a devastating loss, Zoe's husband Max decides that he no longer wants to be a father. He's not interested in being Zoe's husband either. To cope with the divorce, Zoe turns to her love of music and a surprising new friendship. Max, a semi-recovered alcoholic, backslides into depression and booze. It takes a near-fatal accident and the support of a charismatic preacher to save Max from himself and lead him to a new, Godly, life. At the same time, Zoe is building her own new life and finding a new and exciting, if forbidden, love with her friend Vanessa. Eventually, Zoe's world and Max's world will collide in a custody battle over three fertilized embryo's. Now married to Vanessa, Zoe knows the fertilized eggs are her last shot at motherhood. Max has come to believe that God condemns Zoe's lifestyle and lets himself become convinced that he must protect his "pre-born" children from exposure to it. Religion, homosexuality, adultery, addiction, accusations of impropriety...the book is action packed to the point it sometimes seems a bit much. Luckily, the characters are warm and believable, the dialogue is also believable and the story moves along at a quick pace that will have the reader turning pages long into the night.

Casual Vacancy

J K Rowling

I was never a fan of the Potter series but thoroughly enjoyed this foray into the unique mind of JK Rowling. I love her character development, the slow unveiling of who is who and how they fit into the story. The book is characteristically rich in detail which drags it down in places but the story itself is strong enough to carry you past the more tedious information.
