I loved this book. McCullough may be our greatest story teller in the realm of history; and his output is amazing. H writes with a blend of careful research and adventure tales, with a hefty dose of characterizations. I loved the detail and anecdotes he used to enliven his story, and anyone interested in American History couldn't go wrong by getting hold of this book.

Dancing in the Dark A Cultural History of the Great Depression
by
Morris Dickstein

I came to this book with some excitement, as I've been so impressed by the artistic products that emerged from this period, and because my parents were of 'the depression era,' and it marked them for life. It's a long read: about 650 pages. It carried me along for a while, a bit rambling, I found, but interesting. Clearly the author is very fond of the period. But as I hit the middle, which has an extensive section on someone named Gold, who I'd never heard of, I began to lose interest, and put the book aside for another time. So writing this review is a good reminder to return to Mr. Dickstein's opus, and give it, perhaps, a more fair reading. The author certainly immerses himself in the time.

Storm of War A New History of the Second World War

An amazing read, this history, the only overview of WWII I'm familiar with, since Wm Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich," published in 1960, is a vigorously written overview of WW II. The prose is gripping, one of the first overview books that reads, for me, like a novel, yet is a balanced view of the various major personalities and events of the War. Done to a large extent from the German point of view, it tries to understand how the Nazis lost the war by analyzing tactics and strategies. A page-turner.
