This book starts off a little bit slowly. She discribes things in such a way that you really feel like you know the people and places. She has such a way of transporting her reader. Every character is complex and real. There are huge twists throughout the book, I actually gasped once or twice. Through out the book you end up loving, hating, routing for, and shaking your head at each of the main characters. I really could hardly put it down. This one is more that worth a read.

Usually short stories aren't for me but Jamaica Kincaid has such a way with words. I loved all of the stories in here. Kincaid writes so beautifully I can't help but keep reading. Her stories really capture and inspire you. After I read this book I seached out more of her books, she's one of my favories. Everyone should read them at some point.

Voices of a Peoples History of the United States

If you have any interest in history at all you'll love this. This book is full of powerful essays and speaches. It covers the people who you don't typically hear about in school the rebels, the people who spoke out against what was going on in the US. So much of this left me with goosebumps. While I read this I found myself writing down the writers names and looking for more from them after I was finished with this. Those people are now some of my favorite writers and pesonal heros.

New Rules of Lifting for Women Lift Like a Man Look Like a Goddess
by

I loved what he had to say. I am one of those women who has always been afraid of lifting heavier weights for various reasons, so I was experiencing the frustration he talks about in the book where I'm doing what I should be and not getting the results that I want. Everything was so clear and no nonsense which is great because sometimes books about working out make everything sound so complicated that it's intimidating. He started out explaing why you should lift heavier weights and debunking some myths about womens workout routines. The way he put everything was really motivating, and helped me having the confidence to get started. There are great recipies in the book and tips about what to eat and how often. Then there are the workout routines, which are easy to understand. I've just started the workouts so we'll see about how it works. The way the workouts progress overtime I'm really excited about, some of the moves are things I didn't think I would be able to achive and now I have instructions on how to get to my goals.

Sexual Intimacy for Women
by
Glenda Corwin

This book had a lot of information about all the things that could go wrong or be causing problems in a relationship. The first two thirds of the book seemed to all be potential problems. The last few chapters they talked about some things you could do to make a relationship stronger and deal with issues but for the most part I felt like the book was really lacking. I felt like there could have been more information on things to help each of the problems they went over, it was very negative. The book was really almost discouraging.

Despite the Falling Snow

This is a really great book. The story goes back and fourth between current day in Boston and post-Stalin Russia really seamlessly. The way that the characters meet and continue the story together you get to know different sides of each of them. I definitely was wanted all of them to get the things they want and are trying to achieve through out the book, even though it's complicated. When the grown children go to Moscow together to learn the truth about what happened the story goes in a direction that I didn't expect. Overall this was a really great read.

I Cant Think Straight

This book is a love story about two women, one from Jordan the other from London. It's loosely based on how the author and her wife got together. I found the characters really likable and engaging. Both main characters do some growing throughout the book. It is also pretty funny in some spots. It's very similar to the film, I do still like the book better because I liked Leyla better in the book than in the film.

Lovers Dictionary
by
David Levithan

I love the uniqueness of this book. The author describes the narrators relationship and the course it takes through dictionary entries. You understand the course of the relationship and the meaning it has even though there is no sequential telling of events. He is very honest and describes the highs and lows in the relationship, he describes love with words you wouldn't usually associate with love. By incorporating words that aren't usually a part of the way we talk about love he expresses some of the complexity of love.

Eleven Minutes
by
Paulo Coelho

I really enjoyed this book. It's about a woman who gives up on love very early in life and seeks out fortune by traveling to Sweden to become a dancer. She eventually becomes a prostitute. Throughout the book she is exploring her feelings about love and sex in her journal. She ends up meeting someone and struggling to decide how to handle the feelings she has for him. Some of the passages from her journal are really insightful and others are just beautiful. My favorite quote from the book is: “Anyone who is in love is making love the whole time, even when they’re not. When two bodies meet, it is just the cup overflowing. They can stay together for hours, even days. They begin the dance one day and finish it the next, or--such is the pleasure they experience--they may never finish it. No eleven minutes for them.”

Possessing The Secret Of Joy
by
Alice Walker
jai41004
, March 10, 2012
Alice Walker is one of my favorite writers and I absolutely love this book. The story follows Tashi, who was a minor character in The Color Purple, as she deals the emotional trauma from her past and is seeking out happiness and peace. The deals a lot with the subject of female circumcision and the effect it had on Tashi. The characters are really complex and multidimensional which makes them seem very real. The chapters are written from the point of view of each of the different main characters helping you get even more of an understanding of them and making the story even more compelling.
