Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. 365 Daily Affirmations for Time Management
by
Jan Yager and Ph. D. Jan Yager

, October 02, 2011
If you need something to help you plan out your time, or a friendly guide to tell you what time management methods you could use while tackling your school, work, or leisure days (all of which seem too full of things to do and not enough accomplished), try this book. It’s short, it’s sweet, and if you take the bits of advice to heart, it’s really helpful in a nonjudgmental way. If you want to get the most of it, you should read it with Jan Yager’s book “Productive Relationships”.

365 Daily Affirmations for Happiness
by
Jan Yager and Ph. D. Jan Yager

, October 02, 2011
I found myself smiling just reading quickly through “365 Daily Affirmations for Happiness;” I’m sure that if I took the time to digest a single one each day, the profound simplicity of each affirmation would give me plenty to think about and connect with. I think Dr. Jan Yager has done a good thing by focusing on writing a book purely made up of positive, uplifting statements; we of the busy world focus too much on efficiently getting work done and various negative things in life, and we tend not to spend enough time on ourselves and our happiness. But there will always be negative things in life. There will always be things that we just cannot control. What this book reminds you of is what you are in control of is your happiness; change your mindset and your life will change. Statements like “Money is only money, not a substitute for happiness” and “I can change someone’s life with one conversation” really hit home with me; they might make a difference in your life too.

Productive Relationships: 57 Strategies for Building Stronger Business Connections
by
Jan Yager
bookstripes
, August 21, 2011
Jan Yager's new book "Productive Relationships" is a definite winner. There is a conversational tone that causes the reader to feel that Dr. Yager genuinely cares about his or her well-being at work and beyond; she is professional yet warm, a mentor within the covers of a book. From 57 applicable strategies to making work relationships productive, one can choose which strategies to immediately adopt and which ones to come back to later. The many personal stories included in this book also provide an inside perspective on so many of the "types" you may encounter in the workplace especially vampire bosses and even the loneliness of CEO's. Reading "Productive Relationships" made me stop and realize that, yes, even bosses are human; and so their feelings are just as legitimate as yours. The overall message of this excellent book is that everyone you do business with deserves respect, and that it is necessary to cooperate with others while also remaining confident of your own abilities. Stellar advice and an easy read!
