Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Palace of Treason

An action-packed post-Cold War espionage thriller with recipes!
Palace of Treason
is the second book in the Red Sparrow trilogy by Jason Matthews. Now I need to go back and read
Red Sparrow
. I particularly like books that transport me to the scene of action with detailed descriptions. In this case, the recipes made a unique contribution to the sights and sounds and tastes of place.

The Ice Queen

The Ice Queen is an English language translation of a
Krimi
by popular German author Nele Neuhaus. Detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver Bodenstein investigate a series of murders that takes them into a dark period of German history. I particularly liked the efforts of Pia's long-lost friend Miriam to help with the investigation into the history of events in Eastern Prussia (now Poland) 50+ years before the present. The Ice Queen had everything that I look for in a good mystery -- plot full of unexpected twists and turns, realistic characters, and a well described setting that takes me away from my everyday life. Definitely hard to put down.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry: Britt-Marie 1
by

I totally loved the adventures of 7-year-old Elsa as she carried out her dead grandmother's final wish that Elsa deliver letters of apology that the grandmother has written to various people, many of them somewhat "odd" characters who live in the same apartment building that she does. Elsa seems much older than her years, as she sets out on her task. It was also fun to hear about Elsa's life in a Swedish city.

Higher Love Skiing the Seven Summits

I loved
Higher Love: Skiing the Seven Summits
by Kit DesLauriers. While it is a great story of Kit's drive to be the first person to climb up and ski from the summits of the highest peak on each continent, I also really enjoyed the well written descriptions of the people and places that she visited along the way. Perhaps my favorite was Elbrus, with a Soviet-era mountaineering camp in a secret hanging valley. I received a free review copy of
Higher Love
through Goodreads Giveaways.

Plenty: Vibrant Vegetable Recipes from London's Ottolenghi

Several new cookbooks came my way this Christmas, but when it came time to make something for a holiday potluck, I ended up passing the other books by and making a couple of different dishes from Plenty. I quite like the organization based on type of vegetable or at least vegetable family, rather than the more traditional part of the meal or course organization. The dishes have interesting combinations of flavors and textures, such as the pomegranate seeds in the burnt eggplant with tahini. The recipe and chapter introductions along with many colorful photographs mean that the book is makes good reading as well as good eating.

A facinating window into the early history of mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada.
