Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Long Way Home: Chief Inspector Gamache 10
by
Louise Penny

I have read all of Louise Penny's inspector Gamache mysteries and ithis is my favorite. Inspector Gamache has retired in Three Pines in Quebec Canada. He reluctantly agrees to search for Peter, the husband of a friend. The solution to Peter's disappearance is surprising. I especially liked the descriptions of Quebec Province and of the art of Quebec. Reading this book lead me to read Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

I waited 5 years for this book. It was great. I love the series and the shows on HBO. My whole family is reading it. I especially like Arya, Jon Snow and Tyrion. Hope I dont't have to wait 5 more years for the next book.

In the Woods
by
Tana French

In the Woods is a great psychological thriller about murder detectives in Dublin. Rob is a childhood survivor of a crime in the same woods where, 20 years later, another child has been murdered. As he and his partner, Cassie, try to solve the current murder, he is haunted by the ones he survived but can't remember. I was surprised by the ending. I enjoyed it so much that I am reading Tana French's second book, The Likeness, and have her third book Faithful Place ready to read next.
