Big Rock Candy Mountain

A great book about the West. The title refers to a song about the Big Rock Candy Mountain where the bluebird sings to lemonade springs. The family in the book moves around the Western states, looking for, but never finding, the fulfillment of their dreams. The characters are finely drawn, and the plot primarily moves through the eyes of the son.

Where Rivers Change Direction

The writing in this book is amazing. The descriptions made me feel that I was in someone else's dream. Yet the subject of the book is anything but fantasy; this is the story of a boy growing up on a dude ranch in Wyoming, learning along the way how to become a man. A hard-working, high-integrity man who puts the needs of others first. Scenes from this book will float back into your mind long after you've finished reading.

Wonderfully narrated story that captivates the imagination. Card weaves a fantasy tale explaining old myths and stories within a new and captivating paradigm. It made hours on the road fly by!

What a heady mix of history, science and romance! I never thought I'd be fascinated by this series, heavy on natural philosophy and science, but I avidly read all three books (this is the last one). The wordplay will bring a smile to your lips, and the twists and turns in the adventure will keep you turning pages to the end.
