Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Unorthodox The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots
by
Deborah Feldman
couponqueen
, January 08, 2013
Being a conservative Jew, reading Deborah Feldman's memoir was a real eye opener. She described the Hasidim way of life like no one on the outside looking in could. Before the book's end Ms. Feldman does leave but viewing this journey through her words versus an "outsider's" made the story all the more meaningful. And on the way I learned about aspects of this very Orthodox branch in Judaism more than if I'd been reading a researcher's tale

Beach Trees

This deals with a woman who befriends a single mom that dies and names her as guardian to her 5 year old. It gave me a better perspective of why people on the Gulf Coast and other hurricane ravaged areas decide to rebuild. At the age of 12, Julie Holt's younger sister disappeared-never to be found. It was a loss that slowly eroded the family bonds she once relied on. As an adult with a prestigious job in the arts, Julie meets a struggling artist who reminds her so much of her sister, she can't help feeling protective. It is a friendship that begins a long and painful process of healing for Julie, leading her to a house on the Gulf Coast, ravaged by hurricane Katrina, and to stories of family that take her deep into the past.

Definitely a book for those who enjoy Maeve Binchy's titles. Nice to find someone else who writes of this far away and beautiful country's everyday people. Ready to book a flight over there to search out this very special bunch.

Hands of My Father A Hearing Boy His Deaf Parents & the Language of Love
by
Myron Uhlberg
couponqueen
, April 06, 2009
This son's loving memior of life with his hearing impaired parents is a straight forward and loving tale. Myron writes in such a way that you feel as if you've been transported back to the depression era and are part of Mr. Uhlberg's life. His description of what is was like to be the mouthpiece for his father and sometimes his mother pulls at your heart strings. You will so much more appreciate the sense of hearing after you read this.

This moving story of twins who live separate lives due to their father's snap decision was written from a good perspective. VERY glad to have "read" the audio version as I felt a part of this family and the unique story told within those pages.

Three Cups of Tea One Mans Mission to Fight Terrorism & Build Nations One School at a Time
by
Greg Mortenson
couponqueen
, March 02, 2008
"Three Cups of Tea" written by Greg Mortenson has a central theme which is derived from a proverb and repeatedly it speaks out during this inspirational tale. "The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger," a villager tells Greg Mortenson. "The second time, you are an honored guest. The third time you become family." I found Mortenson's story about his singular efforts to address poverty, educate girls, and overcome cultural divides meaningful and a true learning experience. Three Cups also showed a culture's way to eventually make strangers into "family" in this part of the world.

Peter Jennings A Reporters Life
by
Kate Darnton, Lynn Sherr
couponqueen
, December 30, 2007
This biography was a true eye opener about one of America's jounalistic icons. Having watched Mr. Jennings for so many years on World News Tonite, comments made by both colleagues, interview subjects, friends and family really brought out the true person. And when statements by Mr. Jennings himself were included it showed Peter as he was in addition to the many journalistic endeavors he pursued.
