Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

A wonderful snowy day, cup of tea, take me away tale. Rebecca is a professional photographer from New York City who bails out to the woods far away from the city. She is escaping a past yet meets it head on through a series of events that take her out of her comfort zone. Great characters and an interesting story.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir
by
Jeannette Walls

, November 11, 2014
This book will shock and amaze you. Not only is it like no other story of a family living on the edge of society but it is true! The author makes it out of poverty and shares her shocking story. The book Jeannette Walls wrote after this is actually chronologically before "The Glass Castle". Entitled " Half-Broke Horses" it too will hold you spellbound in disbellef. I counted my blessings after reading these!

This wonderful story delighted and enthralled me for hours as a young child. I was there with these characters and the beautiful drawings were well-done and complemented it nicely. Still plenty of Summer left to take a trip to the Secret Garden!

All the Light We Cannot See
by
Doerr, Anthony
Colorado Jess
, June 04, 2014
I am aware that many books have been written on the subject of World War 11. Each has a different slant on the subject and "All The Light We Cannot See" shows the war from the prospective of a German boy turned soldier and a French blind girl. Be prepared to be dazzled and touched. Anthony Doerr has an amazing writing style that often gave me pause. The characters in this book come to life through his clever imagination. This book grabbed me from start to finish. Well-done Mr. Doerr and I hope your story reaches a large audience.

Boys in the Boat Nine Americans & Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
by
Daniel James Brown

This book exceeded my expectations by a lot! Fasten your seatbelt and hang on for an amazing ride through a time of dustbowls, shantytowns, and abject poverty juxtaposed next to the blue-blood sport of rowing. What makes this so inspiring is that we get to follow a group of University of Washington guys go from being poor farmers, loggers, and fishermen to first class rowers despite their backgrounds. This is set during the time leading up to and during the Olympics of 1936 when Hitler and his ego wanted so badly to win. I would put this in the same league of writing as Unbroken. That good!

Life & Times of the Thunderbolt Kid A Memoir
by
Bill Bryson
Colorado Jess
, November 23, 2013
I will admit it. I am a huge Bill Bryson fan. In this book, as most of his others, I was brought to tears of laughter and made to ponder. Bill Bryson brings to life a childhood of innocence and mischief in the 1950's. Picture him during a civil defense drill, sitting at his desk while everyone else, including the teacher, is under theirs. His father had pointed out that if there was a bomb, they would all be dead within 90 minutes. So Bill spends his time constructively reading a comic book. Make sense to me!

One Summer America 1927
by
Bill Bryson
Colorado Jess
, October 24, 2013
Bill Bryson will be no stranger for many. His cleverness, insightfulness, and humor are on full display in this new non-fiction book. This delightful romp will educate and amuse anyone remotely intrigued with America in the years surrounding 1927. And, yes, fascinate those of us that didn't know we were interested in what went on then, as well! He brings subjects to light and to life that would not ordinarily be of interest. For instance, I am not a boxing fan, yet he drew me into the life of Jack Dempsey and his ilk. There is something for everybody and I have even recommended it to people who were not born here but have made America their home. I wish my history classes had been this interesting! Enjoy!

Behind the Beautiful Forevers
by
Boo, Katherine
Colorado Jess
, January 06, 2013
This is a gritty intense book that tells it like it is. Katherine Boo has worked hard to blend in, as well as a white person can, to record accounts of poverty, love, greed, lust and so many other emotions common to us all. I am forever changed and thankful of my new awareness. One can no longer live in ignorance about the lives of other less fortunate people. Stunning.

Here Comes Trouble Stories from My Life
by
Michael Moore

, January 01, 2012
Oh Michael Moore. You never cease to amaze me with your brazen attempts to set this country on a more positive and just course. Thanks for standing up for the voiceless. This is a fun,thought-provoking read. I certainly understand now where he is coming from and how he got and has used his gift.
