Rowan Of Rin 01 Rowan Of Rin

This is a wonderful book that many children can relate to especially boys who are small for their age and tend to be socially awkward. Rowan is a young boy who gets scared easily and doesn't have many friends. In a way, he is socially awkward. Rowan enjoys spending time with the Bukshah, a tamed local beast that the villagers use them for plowing and other heavy duty activities. His job is to care for the Bukshah. One day, the stream that the Bukshah drink from started to dry up. Within a few days, the stream dried up to a tiny trickle. The villagers were afraid because they need the Bukshah. Rowan ended up being part of the search party to go up into the mountain to find out what was blocking the flow of the sweet water. The journey was dangerous and in the end, he must face a scary dragon. By the end of the book, Rowan realized how brave he was and he returned home as a hero.

Last Child in the Woods Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder
by

What an eye-opening book on why children and youth need nature to help them to be creative, healthy and better concentration for school and work. I love in section 16 when the author mentioned how natural education in the schools help students be better in school, good peer relationships, and other benefits. Louv discovered Portland's Environmental Middle School and said about the school as "teachers employ a curriculum using local rivers, mountains, and forests; among other activities, they plant native species and study the Willamette River. At that school, 96 percent of students meet or exceed state standards for math problem-solving--compared to only 65 percent of eight-graders at comparable middle schools" (p.207-8).
