Best American Short Stories 2014
by
Jennifer Egan, Heidi Pitlor

I've been reading the Best American Short Stories collection every year for the past three years, and this collection has a fantastic variety of strong writers. Jennifer Egan has a keen eye for selecting stories that are successful and very unique from one another. I've always been a fan of Egan's work, so it was great to read about how what writing interests and entertains her. Nicole Cullen's "Long Tom Lookout" was my favorite story by far. What amazing writing! If you want to discover new, engaging fiction writers, this is a great place to start.

Bobcat and Other Stories
by
Rebecca Lee

This is an exquisite collection by Rebecca Lee. Each story is able to contain a great amount of emotion. In short fiction, every sentence has to count, and Lee is able to construct beautiful sentences that pack a lot of punch. The characters are memorable and relatable, and yet there is a hint of the exotic, the unknown, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar, in each story. I read these stories hungrily, and felt very content when I finished the book. I look forward to reading more of Lee's work in the future.

The Scorpio Races
by
Stiefvater, Maggie

, June 25, 2013
I feel like this is one of those amazing books that flew under the radar. I've read small blurbs and heard rumors praising this book, and when I finally read it, it's like I was let in on such an amazing secret. The Scorpio Races is completely original. The story takes place on the fictional island of Thisby. Every October, Celtic water horses gallop from the sea onto the beach. Water horses look like larger versions of the horses we know, but they are also fierce and flesh-eating beasts. Men of Thisby capture the water horses to use for a deadly race in November: The Scorpio Races. There are two main characters: Sean and Puck. Sean has won the Scorpio Races before, and wants to win again. Puck is the first girl rider, and she enters the race not for fame, but for the money, which she and her family desperately need. While it has elements of fantasy and mythology, it feels quite real. The island in which the story is set feels tangible. I smelled sea air while reading this book. The romance is very subtle, gentle, but completely believable. Every character is complex and fully realized. Adults would (and should) appreciate this book just as much as young adults. I have already bought another copy for my best friend, and I've lent my own copy to be read. If you like the Hunger Games, this should definitely be your next read. My only regret is that it's not part of a series, because I would love to read more books set in the same world. The Scorpio Races haunted me and will continue to haunt me. Spread the word. Read this book.

Geek Love
by
Katherine Dunn
Lyndsie
, January 03, 2013
My novel workshop professor recommended this to me and lent me her copy. I loved it so much, I bought my own edition. Dunn does a beautiful job on making the unordinary ordinary, on making an unusual family seem as dysfunctional as any other (in their own astonishing ways). The mindset of these people and how they value physical abnormality was so interesting and terrifying at the same time. After reading this, I sought out Tod Robbins' short story, "Spurs." Geek Love opened my eyes, both as a reader and a writer. I admire Katherine Dunn for taking the leap she did to write this book. It easily became my favorite book read in 2012 and quite possibly one of my favorite books ever. I look forward to reading more of Dunn's work.

House Of Women
by
Lynn Freed

This is the first book I've read by Lynn Freed, and I can't wait to read more. House of Women is a very powerful and emotional story of a mother-daughter relationship. The characters are wonderful. I could not help but feel attached to them, no matter what horrible choices they made or who they fell in love with.
