Devil in Silver A Novel
by
Victor Lavalle
Amber Perry
, January 06, 2013
Where can I start in this review? Victor LaValle is a master in weaving literature, the supernatural, pop culture and humor into a story that made me dread ending. In this novel, Pepper is held against his will in a mental institution where the patients claim they're being tormented by the Devil. And therein lies the problem. Does Pepper believe the patients, who are mentally ill? Does his belief in their story hinger on his mental stability? And what does Vincent van Gogh have anything to do with this? As usual the mental hospital is stuffed with a cast of characters that help/hinder Pepper in his attempts to escape. And in LaValle's writing, we become enraptured in their stories so that the story's success isn't just on Pepper's shoulders. The writing is crisp and witty. I found myself more than once underlining passages because they're so funny.

I loved this book! I can't say enough about it. The novel spans about five years as the main character comes to terms with her place in America as a woman and an artist. The prose is so poetic that most of my copy is underlined. Enjoy.
