Berlin Noir
by
Philip Kerr
Jukesgrrl
, January 30, 2013
This single volume by the Scottish novelist Philip Kerr comprises the three novels in which he introduced the Berlin detective Bernie Gunther. We follow Gunther, who has quit the Berlin police force because of his disgust with the politics, as he navigates the unimaginable world of emerging Nazi Germany in the years leading up to World War II. To see one of Europe's great cities through the eyes of a non-Nazi resident dealing with the results of Hitler's rise to power is a profound and fascinating reading experience.

Spies of the Balkans
by
Alan Furst
Jukesgrrl

I'm a huge fan of Furst's World War II novels and have read them all. But Spies of the Balkans stands out as one of his most accessible, evocative, and page-turning. This requires no background knowledge about the war or the Balkan nations. It's just a flat-out, fast-moving story about integrity and bravery in a time when Europe is in the midst of some of history's darkest days. Furst's characters and his portrait of Salonika are vivid and moving. Despite the fact that the author is clear-eyed in his presentation of Nazi and Fascist evil, his stories give one hope for the actions of good, brave (although not one-dimensional) women and men ultimately triumphing in the face of political oppression. If you enjoy WWII novels, stories of spies in Europe, or the works of Eric Ambler, Graham Greene, Philip Kerr, Joseph Kanon, or David Downing, add Alan Furst to your reading list if you haven't already.
