Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

White Girls
by
Als, Hilton

A challenging, beautiful, and at times heartbreaking work with an incredible scope. The "White Girls" under Als's scope include himself (a gay black man), Flannery O'Connor, Michael Jackson, Truman Capote, and the many lives of Richard Pryor. The opening essay, "Tristes Tropiques," is one of the best things I've ever read - period. I don't always agree with Als's writing, but between this and his columns in The New Yorker, it's a pleasure to watch a mind like his at work.

Who Thought This Was a Good Idea The Unlikely Adventures of a White House Insider
by
Alyssa Mastromonaco
Melanie Germond
, September 23, 2017
A fun and refreshing account of life inside the Obama White House. Mastromonaco is an engaging narrator and knows how to weave a good anecdote (you'd never tell by looking at some of her photos that she nearly had an IBS attack before meeting the Pope). I also liked how she wove in the names of her colleagues and collaborators into each story, showing how hard she (and hundreds) of others worked to respond to emergencies. It's certainly not marketed this way, but I also found the book to be a really good career book for young women that has a lot of sound advice. I'd recommend this to anyone who's recently graduated college and isn't exactly sure what to do next.

Men Explain Things to Me
by
Rebecca Solnit
Melanie Germond
, June 16, 2015
I really enjoyed each of the seven essays in this superb (yet slim) collection, but what really stuck with me about this book was everyone's reactions while I was reading it. Reading in public felt like a work of performance art. Everyone from coworkers to random men on TriMet took one look at the title and asked me about it, wanting to know if men had, in fact explained things to me (they had). At the very least the book is a conversation starter, which all good books ought to be.

Wolf in White Van A Novel
by
John Darnielle
Melanie Germond
, October 27, 2014
WOLF IN WHITE VAN is not for the faint of spirit. It will unsettle you in the best of ways. This book sits in the back of your mind like an idling car at 2 AM and it will not leave you. Darnielle is a master storyteller and has pulled off another incredible heartbreaking, goosebump-inducing journey into the unintended consequences of our choices.
