Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Crunch Time

Goldy's at it again! When her friend Yolanda needs a place to stay and a crime solved, Goldy offers her house, along with her expert investigative services, in spite of husband Tom's watchful eye. I would have enjoyed more cooking and less detective work. Goldy's stepping on the police investigation stretches the limits at times. Other than Tom and the ever faithful Sgt. Boyd, favorite characters such as Arch and Marla are barely mentioned. Still, the plot is engaging and the excitement is non-stop. Fans will enjoy the plot twist in the Schulz marriage as well.

Flight Behavior
by
Barbara Kingsolver
Marjorie Fuller
, January 01, 2013
Barbara Kingsolver creates such wonderfully developed and fascinating characters in this socially conscious novel about a small town in the Tennessee Appalachians. Dellarobia Turnbow's life as mother and wife is not what she planned for herself. When the monarch butterflies arrive on her property, she grabs onto the miracle and follows where it leads.

Meryl Streep Movie Club

I really liked the characters in this book. Not really a new plot line--three women tied together by a tragedy in their youth--the way they learn to like each other after many years and different lives is heartwarming. Believe it or not, the weakest part of the story is the attempt to tie in the various Meryl Streep movies. It is frequently a stretch and almost forced at times. Each of the women learns to both stand on her own and lean on the others, with the charming backdrop of a bed and breakfast in a small Maine town, providing a refreshing look at female relationships and the factors that form and ruin them.

Expats
by
Chris Pavone

The Expats didn't quite live up to all the hype considering the publicity during pre-release and comments on the dust jacket, but overall it is a fast and exciting read. The mysterious life of spies galavanting through glamorous European cities is irresistible and hard to put down. Beware that the author overuses the flashback and flashforward, so if you do put the book down it can be hard to remember where you are in time when you pick it back up again. The plot is predictable shortly into the book, but even if you can guess what will happen it is fun to see how the author takes you to that point. I am looking forward to more from Chris Pavone, hopefully more Expats adventures.
