So glad I decided to read this book. Celebrating 1814 - 2014 and the Francis Scott Key penning of the Star Spangled Banner. So much incredible history written in such a way that it is hard to put down! I would recommend this to all Americans! We have much to be proud of.

This book really explained in detail how the horrors in Berlin were so misunderstood and under appreciated at the time. Everyone should read this book.

FANTASTIC!!!!!! I feel as though I just spent 50 or 60 yrs in rural North Carolina with Roxanna Slade and her family. Such beautiful writing...hard to compare to anyone else I have read lately. Highly recommended, I did not want this book to end. I will be on the look out for more Reynolds Price right away...can't get enough of his fabulous prose.

This is a great read...the kind of book you don't want to end! I just hope they don't ruin in when they make the film...too good to ruin.

John Adams

I borrowed this book from the local library a few years ago as a rather "punitive" measure reminiscent of the duly enforced summer reading of my catholic school heritage. I was fully prepared to be bored witless! However what a wonderful surprise awaited me. I was totally hooked from the first few pages and have highly recommended this wonderfully researched and well delivered tome to many friends and relatives over the years since. I felt like I was given a window into the lives of so many historical figures that we learned about in school. Not boring when David McCullough puts in in perspective. This was a great read.

I always give this book as a gift to my book loving friends and it has never failed me...EVERYONE LOVES IT. It is not defined by gender, age, race or any "type" of reader. The last time I bought a copy of this book for a gift I re-read it myself.

Hands down absolutely one of the best books I have ever read (as an adult!) Every one I recommend this to is also thrilled and grateful for the title. Coming of age and so much more. READ THIS BOOK or at least put it on your bucket list...you will not be sorry.

This beautifully written book was a joy to read! My cousin purchased it at an lovely independent bookstore in Woodstock Vermont last summer because it was highlighted as a local author. She read it and then sent it to me. I am looking for Mr. Lent's new book now. An unusual story of love, family and how decisions made have profound effects on loved ones. Highly recommended.

This is one of the best books I have read all summer. What a foursome of unlikely characters! Set in Paris, it abounds with humor and pathos. I found the individuals hard to resist. Beautifully written, I can't wait to read other works by this author
