Life After Betrayal: A Practical Guide
by
Lynda Bevan and Lynda Bevan and Lynda Bevan
Janstone
, February 28, 2012
Ordering this book is not something anyone wishes they have to do, but Lynda Bevan knows how to lay it all out straight for those who have been betrayed. In what might be the worst period of your life, she provides clear, doable and reasonable steps to move forward -- a very difficult thing for victims. She speaks straight English, no pycho-babble. Read the book, highlight what resonates, put it away and pull it out if those familiar feelings are beginning to return. Thanks Lynda for addressing a horrible situation with care and compassions.

Recovering the Self: A Journal of Hope and Healing (Vol. II, No.1)
by
Dempsey, Ernest
Janstone
, February 28, 2012
Recovering the Self, a Journal of Hope and Healing, Vol. 11, No. 1 is an awesome quarterly literary journal from Ernest Dempsey for people who are struggling w/some life problem and looking for like-minded individuals and others who understand. Contributors come from around the world and from all kinds of specialities like psychologists and life coaches as well as nurses, poets, essayists and and people like you and me who have lived and learned. Each article is short but full of valuable insight. The art and the poetry add more than I can say. More people should know about this journal. It can help them be more comfortable in the knowledge that they aren't alone, and others share tough, scary challenges. I don't know if this approach exists anywhere else than in this quarterly journal. That's invaluable knowledge, and it can help change peoples' lives.

Trona to Austin: How Life Snuck Up on Me
by
Paul MacLean
Janstone
, January 18, 2012
Trona to Austin--How Life Snuck Up on Me by Paul MacLean I've just begun trying non-fiction writing -- essays, memoirs. So I thought Trona to Austin by Paul MacLean might give me some hints on what works, how a published non-fiction writer gets published. Even before the prologue he gave me confidence by his comment "I simply want to leave a few tracks so further generations can know what came before." I don't know that I have the ability to write so meaningfully of my generations' tracks as Paul does of his life, its up and downs, the connections he makes between the past, present and future. To me he's a gifted writer who gives meaning to everyone's lives through his experiences and how the interprets them. From kids to religion to sports, he chronicles his life and in so doing shows us all that we can survive -- and even more than survive -- and what we do has meaning. With all its stories, challenges, internal debates and reminiscences, Trona to Austin is a book that validates Everyone. Take time to relish in the read.

Your Daily Walk with the Great Minds: Wisdom and Enlightenment of the Past and Present (3rd Edition)
by
Richard A., Jr. Singer
Janstone
, January 16, 2012
Richard Singer's "Your Daily Walk With the Great Minds" is a daily meditation book that raises the bar on the rest. How he knows where to find the pieces of greatness that are the quotes from brilliant humanitarians, philosophers, historians, etc. is in itself a huge achievement. He starts each day w/one of those quotes, then a meditation to think about and finally a recommendation for daily journaling. Whether or not you journal, the quotes and Singer's interpretations are applicable to every walk of life. I knew this was something special when I realized I was putting aside additional time every day to read and think about the quote and meditations. It's hard in a busy and hectic world to believe that there's really time to find your passions and act on them. Just by trying to act on his daily journaling thought and the quote of the day, I feel a little bit more promise in my day, even if it lasts for only a little bit. There's also recommendations for a book a month that I would trust now that I've spent some time with this Daily Walk.

Ridin' Around
by
Elaine Fields Smith

Ridin' Around--Tailights in Chrome, 8-Tracks on Wheels is an awesome trip that anyone who came of age in the late 70's early '80s will want to read. Elaine Fields Smith sincerely and poignantly brings alive memories so spot on as well as universal stories that stand the test of a time for college students in those magic moments of the waning 20th century. Learning life lessons while driving fast and feeling the wind through your fingers held out the open window were part of every day life. The road Glenda, Tanya, Janie and others take as they complete college are full of unforgettable highs and lows of friendship and love and growing up in a period not often written about, but worthy of these memories. Smith recalls the truths of those times in a way only an observant, honest and genuine storyteller can bring to life over 30 years later. She easily brings readers right back to a time when Camaro's, Corvettes, Thunderbirds, TransAm's and pick ups were as important to a teen's life as their friends. And music was all the more memorable and remarkable because of a new-fangled technology called the 8-track. It "was wonderful to have mobile music at your fingertips" the girls of Central Texas University recall. Dairy Queens and Taco Bells, Boz Scags and Otis Day and The Knights, love that deepened slowly, all in good time, life lessons from families where troubles ran deep, and the special relationships shared with dads and their daughters who were growing up--all of that is part of a decade that was at once happily naïve, kinder and easier than the life of today's college kids. My kids, many young men and women whose parents grew up exactly as Smith captures--they wouldn't go wrong gifting their parents with Ridin' Around--Tailights in Chrome, 8-Tracks on Wheels by Elaine Fields Smith. We'll be remininiscing forever!
