Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Passage A Novel
by
Justin Cronin
Emily T
, August 02, 2012
Not just a vampire story, this post-apocalyptic saga weaves together various narratives to create a vast and mysterious new land. Cronin's language makes this 700+ page book fly by, and his characters make you want to read it over again (I did) in anticipation of the next book. This story doesn't conform to any one specific genre and mixes ingenious narration styles to create a seamless world. Highly recommended!

Lamb
by
Bonnie Nadzam
Emily T
, February 07, 2012
After his father dies, a divorce, disconnected from his peers and lover, David Lamb befriends a lonely misfit 11-year old girl named Tommie. What begins as his object lesson for her becomes a tenuous platonic relationship, then a bargain, then something more. This is a road novel, exploring the nature of love, pathology, human connection, and trust. There are echoes of Lolita, but Lamb lacks the irony, ambivalence, and wry humor of Nabokov’s masterpiece. Nadzam’s descriptions of the starkly beautiful Colorado landscape are in harsh contrast with the grit of the Chicago Lamb is fleeing, and her prose is reminiscent of both Annie Proulx and Cormac McCarthy in its spare yet effusive language. It’s engrossing, a bit disturbing, but you will not regret reading it.

A Visit from the Goon Squad
by
Jennifer Egan

This book and its engrossing and intertwined narratives had me spellbound from the first chapter. As a commentary on music, youth culture, emotional scars, and the potential future I found each story separately powerful. Combined together the characters and their relationships resonated with me in a way I haven't experienced for some time. Egan's wit and imagination are well displayed here, and the journey this book takes the reader on is riveting.
