Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash
by
Jean Shepherd
Deek Rivers
, October 21, 2014
Jean Shepherd was the narrator and inspiration behind the holiday staple, "A Christmas Story." But that's just one of the many tales in this collection told by a middle-aged guy in the 1960's looking back on his Depression-era Indiana boyhood and the characters in his small town. Shepherd was a great radio storyteller in real life, some of his airchecks and recordings are still around the Internet if you look here and there, and this book reflects that sense of kid-like wonder, absurdity and reckoning. You'll find there's more to The Old Man, Mom, Randy, and Ralphie than just one Christmas story.

In the Garden of Beasts Love Terror & an American Family in Hitlers Berlin
by
Erik Larson

I'm a slow reader by nature. I'll start a book, read a little, put it down, return to it, rinse and repeat. This one was different. I've never come across a book that had the particular framework as this one: the story of an American family, transplanted to Germany, the father hastily appointed ambassador to Germany as Hitler's rise to power takes place. I finished it late into the evening of the second day, and can recommend it as a engrossing story of national events and family dynamics; it felt like the author was asking me, what would you do if you were in their place?

Idiot America How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free
by
Charles P Pierce
Deek Rivers
, January 02, 2012
Read this before you go vote in 2012. An owner's guide to what has happened to American politics in our lifetimes, Charles Pierce uses humor, sarcasm, outrage, and actual reporting to explain what happens and who gets hurts when democracy is put on automatic pilot. You'll laugh till it hurts. And it will.
