Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Best Land Under Heaven: The Donner Party in the Age of Manifest Destiny
by
Michael Wallis
Maureen Barnhart
, July 23, 2017
Mr. Wallis is a gifted story teller, and the reader is introduced to the members of the Donner (and others) party, the many different reasons that they (and others) felt either compelled or moved to travel west, and the evolution of the notion of "manifest destiny". Mr. Wallis interviewed descendants of the party and includes many footnotes regarding his research, which was quite thorough. As a fourth grade teacher who has covered the Oregon Trail, examining the reasons that motivate a family to undertake such a perilous journey help us empathize with the migrants of today, who both need to find a better life and meet that need with an optimistic expectation of their new lives.

Classic Myths to Read Aloud The Great Stories of Greek & Roman Mythology Specially Arranged for Children Five & Up by an Educational Expert
by
William F Russell
Maureen Barnhart
, April 20, 2017
These are fabulous myths with additional notes explaining how some of the names and situations are used in our English vocabulary today. It's a great collection to read to elementary students. Russell's companion books of read aloud classics are also worth having, especially if one is a teacher.

Revolutionize Assessment Empower Students Inspire Learning
by
Richard John Stiggins
Maureen Barnhart
, August 24, 2015
Dr. Rick Stiggins is like the Michael Pollan of educational assessment--he appreciates the basics and encourages healthful use of assessment tools, in the way Pollan addresses food: simplicity, useful.
