Solidarity with Solidarity: Western European Trade Unions and the Polish Crisis, 1980-1982
by
Idesbald Goddeeris
JYoung17102
, December 27, 2010
The task undertaken by editor-contributor Idesbald Goddeeris and fourteen other authors of eleven chapters was formidable, but they accomplished the mission through both forcefulness and subtlety. The labor federations of the nine countries -- all West European -- involved in the study receive detailed attention, as do the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Confederation of Labor (WCL). The environments within which each organization operated are also fleshed out. That Solidarnosc emerged and survived stemmed in no small part from the efforts of the West European unions, not only financially, materially, and educationally, but through their expansion of the faith that workers' rights are basic to human rights and to democracy and that democracy sustains a high quality of material and cultural life for all.

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
by
Michelle Alexander

Michelle Alexander's rigorous and systematic exposure of our criminally unjust system of "justice" belongs at the top of every legislator's reading list and is a must-read volume for all those who would understand this nation. Superb.
