Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Good Dog 101 Easy Lessons to Train Your Dog the Happy Healthy Way

I was looking for a book with some basic dog training for a complete novice. I didn't want fancy show dog obedience training, just some ways to communicate my expectations to an over-energetic dog in my household. I read reviews of various books and didn't see anything that seemed to be what I wanted. I happened across this book and decided to check it out. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is exactly what I wanted. The author's intention is to help you provide real life training so that you and your dog can both be happy, healthy and courteous in everyday life. The first section discusses the traditional training approach, its foundations, and modern science-based approaches. Following that are sections on training specific behaviors - why the behavior is important, step by step instructions for training, and why the approach works as opposed to other methods. I know a little about natural horsemanship which helps with understanding her methods because there is similarity. And I know the techniques work with horses, because they have kept me safe handling animals five or six times my size. If what you want is a well-behaved, easy to live with companion dog, this is the book for you.

We had this book when I was growing up and I would never be without a copy. It is so much fun to read poems aloud. My mother's favorite was "Abdull Abubul Amir". I remember reading "Casey at the Bat" to my nephew when he was about five. There are so many wonderful poems there is something for everyone.
