An unnamed totalitarian regime, in an unnamed city. An father and daughter go about life not talking about the disappearance of wife/ mother. I suspected where this book might be headed early on. But he had me at "epitaphist". Ball creates vivid, heartbreaking images one after another - they sing, they dance and even though I knew they would end in tears it didn't matter. Like life really... I loved this book.

This book is quiet and gorgeous. It sneaks up on you and stops you in your tracks. The descriptions of the woods as they change with the seasons are exquisite.

This is a perfect little universe of a book. The characters hiding in the plain site of most of the people they see everyday - you cannot help but love them. While they get to know one another it changes the way they see the world and it changes the way the reader sees the world too. Interspersed with references to great literature and Japanese cinema it is full of moments to savour and in the end that is the whole point.
